It's difficult to visualize your setup with the description provided. Are you keeping the original plastic tubing? If you want it to be exposed you need to get rid of the air silencer and keep in mind that the engine bay will be w/o blockage of the fenderwell . By your filter being exposed its vulnerable to essentiallly more dirt since your multiplying the area of direction that it may receive air from and possibly damaging the wire mesh that surrounds the cotton with disturbances by you when working on the car? The only positive thing about that is that it will be a hell of a lot easier to maintain your filter clean. It will take far less effort to detach you filter if its exposed vs it being in the fenderwell.
