^^^ what he said
if fluid level is low might be time to check your front or rear brakes..

If it's good, try cleaning the float sensor with some brake cleaner. If debri builds up around it will stick. And if that's the case, change your fluid.

Here is what you need to do
1. Check fluid, if low fill to proper level. If full schedule a brake fluid change.
2. Break fluid can absorb 3% to 5% water every year. If you have not ever changed the brake fluid nor the prior owner you could have 20% water in the system and a build up of water borne trash might be causing problems
3. It is best to change fluid every 2 to 3 years max.
4. So even if it is full or needs fluid and it has not been changed in years get a fluid change ASAP

it could also be problems with the ABS package, but i wouldnt jump to that conclusion until the easier fixes are cancelled from the equation.

What kind of sound??? Have you checked your brakes to see if they need changing??? To stop break noise the best thing is when you do finally change the brakes make sure they are chamfered. This makes for a much more quite pad. The pic below is of some brake pads you will notice the 2 center pads are tapered on the ends. This is called chamfer type pads.

get your rotors turned. 5$ a piece at pep-boys with a 20 minute turn around time for all 4 (given you have them off the car already). sounds like theyre warped.

But does it shake when braking? Mainly a vibration in the steering wheel?

Sounds like you may have two different problems. Steering wheel vibe is typically front rotors. Noise in the rear could be misaligned caliper piston. Or sluggish caliper pin, i.e. caliper slide is sticking hold a little bit of pressure to the rear brakes.

Pull the rear calipers back off and lube the slide pin. Also make sure the piston is level and not crooked. Uneven pressure will cause unwanted grabbing and noise and cause the pads to wear unevenly and prematurely.

You might check to see if e-brake lever is fully disenguaged at the rear wheel, also check hand brake lever is all the way off, if there is slack in cable adjust it.
