Hey guys,
I have a 66 Mustang with a 302 5.0L 345hp, I need a new transmission and would like something that is high performance what do you recommend and where do you reccommend I buy it?
I'm not really sure, but they are some of the strongest manual transmissions you can buy for a Mustangs. If you call D&D Performance they could tell you better than me, they are an excellent transmission company. But I'm pretty sure a Viper Spec T56, or TKO 600 will hold more HP than any other manual trans you can buy.
I do have an automatic, do they also have transmissions for them? As you can see, I want all the performance but I know very little about it. What egine with max hp would you reccomend?
There's several different engines you can make that kind of HP with, but your going to need a really stout engine. I would recommend maybe a stroked 351 windsor with a good sized turbo kit, but their are several engine that could be made to produce those numbers.
Try these company for a really strong engine. I would recommend calling them, and telling them what you want to do with your car, and they will be able to advice you better than me.
T5's fit better than TKO's and T56's from what I've heard. And I know for a fact that the T5 is only a fraction of an inch longer than the C4 so you don't need to cut your driveshaft, you just need to have a T5 slip yoke put onto it.

A stock 302 block will not handle that much power reliably. You could always just buy an aftermarket 302 block... but that seems kinda pointless to me. I'd go with a 351 Windsor stroked out to either a 393 or a 408 with forged internals. Get a nice set of aftermarket heads for it (AFR 205s is what I'd recommend). Then with a fairly small blower making 10-12 psi, you should have no problem hitting 600 hp. It will be a much more reliable engine than the 302 as well.
