AIR Pump- Needed?

AIght heres the deal, a couple days ago my check engine light came on, i took it to this place i have gone to before, he ran the diagnostics and said it read that the air pump was malfunctioning, so he reset the ECU saying it may have just been a little defect and if it comes back on come back, so it didnt go back on until the next day, but ive read from a thread here briefly that its a common problem and the aiur pump isnt really needed? i live in florida (no emissions tests)
so what i want to know is should i replace it, could it just be a leak in the hoses to and from the air pump, if its busted and i dont replace it will anything happen to the way my V6 drives? Thanks in advance, any knowledge, suggestions, help greatly appreciated!

Do you remember the exact error code for it?

No he didn't tell me anything except the only thing that was coming up was the air pump

It should be a p0411 code. You should make them give you the code every time so you don't have to trust them and can do research on your own. They have a tendency to tell you one thing but it be another.

If you do not have emission tests then you don't need it. You can remove it and have the check engine light code turned off if you have a chip/x cal 2.

It is located on the passenger side in the front of the wheel well.
