Ok, with my new rim purchase coming up (assuming I can find someone that has them in stock or more than 1 in stock)...I need to pick out tires. I was thinking of getting the BF Goodrich KDW NT, but after reading the reviews of how loud they are, I am not going to get them.
So, I am back to getting Nittos because I have had great experiences with them in the past...and currently. So, here is my dilemma. I am getting 18x10" rears and 18x9" fronts. The fronts I have covered withe 275/40 ZR 18's...the rears are a little less clear. There are 3 sizes to chose from, and I am not sure which one to get. Here are the sizes:
285/35 ZR 18
285/40 ZR 18
295/45 ZR 18 (not sure why they keep increasing the sidewall height with tire width...but they do.)
In reality, I am picking between going with the 295 or 285 size. Which would be the better choice for the rear with the 10" rims?
Basically, the 35's will be almost the same size as the stock 275/40 17s. They are off by a mere 0.74%. The 40's and 45's are off by 4.86% and 9.81% respectively.
My concern would be, would a sidewall of 35 (3.92 in) be enough for the back of the cobra (stock height is 4.33 in).
Ok, that is my thinking out loud. Anyone input from anyone? |

Just thinking out loud.
Edit: Nevermind, looks like a 275/40R17 is the closest size they make to what you're looking for. They're a good tire, though. Real hard to spin.

Yeah, I have hit a couple brands/makes that don't go to the size I need. One thing to keep in mind that I didn't mention, these tires will not be intended for track use. Track runs will be done with another set of rims with some good drag radials on them...like ET Streets...they will probably be a 17" rim purely for the track only.
A little more pondering and I have decided I am either going with 35s both front and back or 40s front and back since Nitto has them both in 275 and 285s. |

nitto's run narrow, look into a 315 for that 10 wide

Nitto drag radials run narrow...these are street radials. I am not going to run DR's on the street anymore. |

You want 275/35-18 on front and either 295/35-18, 305/35-18, or 315/30-18 on the rears.
Why are you wanting to run a 40 series on the 275?

i think a slightly increased sidewall looks good.

35 sidewall for 18's maybe he just is stuck in the habbit of saying 275/40/17

Well, I wasn't sure if I should look at running a little more sidewall or not. The part that got me thinking about it most was the $50 I would save running 40s instead of the 35s. $50 is $50....a weeks worth of gas 
After crunching all the numbers, I think size wise I want to run the 35s for sure. They are damn near the same as stock so it would require the least amount of changes in the tuner so accuracy shouldn't change much. I'm not sure I want to go 295s though...although, the only option Nitto has is the 295/45 18s unless I go drag radials of which I haven't looked into yet because I don't want to run drags for the street anymore....I want to get more than 8-10k miles from my tires....specially at $200+ each. |

With a 10-wide, I'd want at least 295s, especially with Nittos. Even their street tires are not as wide as other manufacturers. |

Well if it helps you any I've been running 35's on my car for about 5k now with no problems. Could tell a minor difference in ride, but that's it, not enough to bother me.

the bfg traction T/As I have on the buick suck-- for what its worth
they don't balance up right (so I get a constant vibration) and they have less frontward traction than my STOCK goodyear eagle LS's had
but on the other hand the bfg traction drag radials on the rustang have pulled 1.75 60's and they're okay on the street but they tend to steer the car a lot, esp if they drop below 20 PSI.. but that's a given

Its hard to find the tires you want for 18s for a decent price thats why I may stick with 17's out back with some 10.5 inch aft rims and a 3/8 spacer so I can fit some 315's

The only problem with going 10.5 in the back with 17s...is you will have to run drag radials (or at least I haven't been able to find anything wider than 275 and I think 1 285 in a 17" street radial). I don't want to run DRs for daily driving anymore....the hydroplaning is going to catch up with me eventually...and I don't want to be that guy posting pics of his car after rolling it from hydroplaning like the 04 sonic blue cobra on svtp.
I am having the same debate with myself trying to decide if I want to get 17x9's all the way around and just run the same stock 275/40's all the way around and get a set of 10.5" rears to put the et streets on for the track... |

Get 18s man, the look is so much nicer. I have falken451 285/35/18's on the front of my car that fit perfectly on the 18x9's (they run small) and Firestone firehawk WideOvals in 295/35/18 on the rear of my car... they look great and actually get pretty decent traction, i was surprised. Theres lots of street radials out there big enough for what you want, just depends how much you're willing to pay. Also, dont shop locally around town. Get on tirerack or discounttiresdirect.com... <---- they even have free shipping.

I would like 10 wide not this 10.5 crap... but they dont make them. I think 18's are better just the issue of tire fitment.
