Sitting at the keyboard.. Looking for someone to take me on the elusive trails that are everywhere in southern NH..
I arrange something with a fellow Jeeper Brett for Sunday..
I call saturday morning.. no answer
I call saturday evening.. no answer
I figure the weekend is shot..
I log on Sunday morning.. Register at a regional Jeep Club
Get a PM within minutes of registering..
Looking for directions to the trailhead
I explain I'm new and dont' know shit
He says ok
I asked if it's allright If I show up
He says Yeah, that's fine
I ask about bringing the family
He says he's bringing his
I show up...
I'm sitting in the parking lot of a Mobile with 5 huge built Toyota Landcruisers.. They are running 35's..
I'm in a stock Rubicon..
So, I wander over, introduce myself..
They joke about my NEW car, with the temporary tags, going out with them..
Finally some Jeep guys show.
So there I am... Sitting with some CJ's and TJ's all running 4-5" of lift.. Smallest one was on 33's.
And I'm in a stock Rubicon..
The toyota guys have NO RESERVATIONS about taking a stock Rubi out with them.. The Jeep guys are excited to see what one will do
We head out after about an hour.
My wife is doing fine as we turn off the paved road
but when we turned off the dirt road, and I dropped her into 4HI the wife freaked..
Turns out we were on the 'access road'.. About 1\2 mile up the access road, the two Jeeps pulled off.. they were just showing the Toyota guys the trail head..
The toyota guys all jump out and air their tires down.. I figure I"m in over my head..
So I tell the jeep guys, I'm heading back with them.. They figure it's a good decision..
So off we go, on the way out.. They decide to 'show me around'
so we're on some pretty difficult boulders (nothing you would imagine a powered car can traverse.. Nate's Jeep would not have stood a chance here), and I"m in 4LO locked front and rear and still have some slippage problems.. I can't imagine an unlocked rig making it.
So, I'm over the 'difficult' part..
about a mile down the road the lead Jeep stops, and the driver gets out.
He walkes back and explains "there's a small water crossing here"... remember this guy is running 4.5" of lift and 33's.
He says, drop it in 4lo and run your lockers..
So off we go.. Straight out into the water..
It's sitting about the lowere opening of my doors, and then the jeep ahead of me DIPS down, so water is up to his windows..
I roll along and hit the dip.
Water flows over the headlights, then I pop up..
water is back to the lower openings of the doors
I'm sitting at about 2500RPMS.. the exhaust has been underwater for about 500 ft now..
if the RPM's drop, the engine will die because it can't push against the water pressure.. If it dies, the exhaust pipe and muffler will fill with water and I won't be able to start it
Remember this is on a STOCK rig, I've owned for 6 days! still has temporary tags on it..
So I pull up, water to the bottom of the doors, and the last 500 ft is clear sailing..
A few more deep mudpuddles (about 3ft deep) and we're clear
Yeah baby.. First scratches on the new Rubi....
Going out next saturday..
Want to go Charles?????
