V6 won't start...help

my buddy got a 1996 V6. his motor went so he put a motor from a 1997 V6 in it and now it will only start sometimes. he put a coil pack and plug wires and plugs in it but it is still doing the same thing. it will start but then you turn it off and it might or might not start again. If anyone can help us out...thanks

It might be the pats system acting up, did you swap the ecu from the 97 engine into the 96?
