So my dad drives a 96 or so club wagon van and it has the 5.0 engine in it. It is a newer, rebuilt engine as I blew out the old on driving home from college (it seems to be a family tradition, my dad did the same thing to his dads car). Anyway, the tranny feels like its about to go again (was rebuilt about a year and a half ago) and I think my dad is just going to get an new car when it goes. So, I asked for the engine, and I think he is going to give it to me. Now, I know its no the same engine as that was in the Mustang, however, is it at all similar? Would be a good foundation to build up a good performance engine? Or would I just be wasting my time and money?

It's probably a non-HO, but at least the block will be a decent starting point. I'm not sure what they come with as far as crank, rods and pistons go... The heads will probably be junk, the cam is definitely junk (non-HO firing order), and the intake will be junk as well.
But... if you are wanting to build a performance engine, they would all be junk even if it was a Mustang engine.
I'd find out if the the crank, rods, and pistons are the same as the Mustang HO motors and go from there.

Are you telling me that Ford uses different firing orders across 302's for different applications?

Yes. I am.
The 302 HO uses the 351W firing order: 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8.
The non-HO is: 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8.

So pretty much what you are saying is if it isn't HO then there is no point in keeping it?

From what I've found out... no. It's still worth keeping.
Basically, the motor is the same. All you need is a HO cam (which you should be replacing anyway if you are building a "performance engine") and a distributor. The crank, rods, and pistons are all the same. The intake and exhaust manifolds (actual manifolds instead of tubular headers) will also be different. But you should be changing those as well...
So really, it's not all that big of a deal that it's not HO.

I don't know if I mentioned, but its EFI. I don't know if that makes a different.
I guess my main concern is if the block is the same, I imagine if I am going to do this I will just put in all new parts, maybe a stroker kit. I dunno. Now all I need is the damn tranny to go, build it, and find some car to put it in.

ALL 302 RODS are EXACTLY the same from the factory short of the BOSS 302 rods from the 60's which are simply high minerality and shot peen'd plus they are fitted with 351 sized connecting hardware (good luck finding them, and spending less money than aftermarket getting them ready to roll)
ALL 302 latemodel Cranks are virtually the same as well with the marking 2MA (1M=289, 2M=pre85 302, 3M=351W, 3MA=latemodel 351) after 85 they went with a single piece rear main seal.
don't know about the pistons, generally a visual inspection will show you if they are flat top or not (you want flat top) if you stay away from boost and nitrous you'd probably want a hypertunic piston anyway.
so you pretty much got a good block, just rip the cam and distributer out and replace them.
