ya so my car has this bad knocking sound and it gets loud around 2200 rpms or just when iam at a constant speed, so i took it to get looked at and they said the rod is bad in piston 4 .....they said they could patch it and i was wandering what that means???? also they said they could rebuild my motor but i would like to know if i can put in a bigger motor in it and how hard would it be to put a Cobra motor in it???? or should i just drive it tell it just doesnt work ???also if you know anything on replacing the rod and piston how hard is it for me to do it myself? Thanks

Dont quote me, but I think a cobra motor has the same block just differnt heads and timing chain setup. They are DOHC instead of SOHC.
You could probrobly find a cobra topend but after that and the bottom end rebuild it will cost alot.
I wouldn't really try to replace a rod bearing if you aren't going to do it yourself. And its very hard, you have to have special tools and measure incredibly small clearances.
Look for a whole cobra motor, or else just a refurbished GT motor.

I would go with a reman GT motor for the cheapest route.
If youre looking to mod, id get a mod5.0 bottom end and take the motor out yourself and strip it down to just the block all yourself and then take the new bottom end rotating assembly (Crank, Rods, Pistons) to a engine shop and have it all installed and balanced and whatnot professionally.

did you let your 17 yr old son drive it.? I did. ...besides that, I have a 2000 saleen 4.6l at 28000 mls and just out of warr. the eng blew. called ford dealer and first words were, is it the #8 cylinder.? seems it has happened more than once. the #8 exploded and took cyl wall with it. I ordered new block yr 2003, $3200.00 and saleen sc, $3400.00 also gears, bearings and install. everything done in local shop was $11000.00. like i said this was in 2003-2004 and prices have risen a little. its a toss-up as to rebuild to save a little or go new w/warr. just as a note, i'm selling mine if interested, opting for much larger eng/hp etc. 25000 mls on engine/sc. 4.6L if interested pm me.

by "patching it" they mean remove just that piston and rod, replace that and the bearings for that, then put it back together..
Honestly that would work for 95% of cars on the road, but it depends on how hard you drive your car... and whether or not the block was damaged at all...

Also, it might be worth listening around the valve cover... you could have a broken spring that would make a pretty damn loud knocking sound... how many miles on the car?

We just found out the bad news about our 01 4.6 gt, noise in and around the valve cover starts at about 2,000 RPM's, the shop indicated that it would be best to buy a motor vice having tear it down etc, much cheaper. Wasn't ready for this bad news since i am restoring an 72 Nova and 79 TRANS-AM. Not sure which way i'll go with this mustang.

I'd be willing to take it off your hands for you
There's a TSB out about this noise, heard most from the fenderwells outside of the car with the hood closed, with the hood open and a stethoscope it can be heard around the valve covers, I had this issue with my 02 GT... it appareantly does not affect performance or longevity, but to cure the noise they had a cylinder head replacement kit, with one or both heads..
With the new heads on my 02 GT, the noise was gone ... if that helps

Cobra blocks and GT blocks are different. 96-99 and some 01 Cobras blocks were made by Teksid, a Ferrari block maker. They were aluminum with steel sleeves and with aftermarket rods/pistons/crank they're good for 750 or so hp. The GT blocks are just typical iron blocks and are only good for 500 ish hp.

Unfortunately this 01 GT only has 29,000 miles, garaged all the time. The shop told us the noise was coming from the #8 side. I won't know what i am going to do with this car as far as go re-manufactured or re-build it, i guess best thing to do is pull it and tear it down, The only bad thing is since this is the wifes car, i am not familiar with 4.6's, i have a 7.3 diesel and some other brands, so not sure what these ford 4.6's can do if modified ?????

it depends on what you modify. If you build the engine with a stronger block etc etc you can make massive hp/tq. You could drop in an 03/04 cobra engine/transmission those in stock form with just a blower/fuel/pulley change and a tune can push out 700hp and hold together. Very strong stock engines.

Check out Welcome To VT Engines and look at their 2 valve offerings. You can make a ton of power with a 2 valve if you build it right...it all depends on what your plans are. Run it NA or run a power adder...you just have to decide up front to make sure you build it right the first time.

Actually 99's and some 2001's had them... The same way ford leaked over some forged pistons into the 92 model year when they supposedly switched to hypereucraptic pistons... I mean hypereutectic.
From Ford Mustang SVT Cobra - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While 2001 Cobra shares almost all the same components of the 1999, some changes were made. The changes included:
The engine block was changed from the Teksid block to the Windsor Aluminum Plant or WAP block. The WAP block is regarded to be weaker than the previous Teksid block. Some 2001s received the Teksid, either from the factory or as a replacement motor.

There are no 00 Cobras, just the saught after 2000 Cobra R(think AARRRrrrrr ). And they have the DOHC Lincoln Navi motor with more aggressive heads/cams. 385 hp and tq of pure road course lovin'.... MMmmmmm..... Ford didn't really have time to make a 2000 Cobra, because of all the recalling they had to do to fix the issues with the 99's. They had problems not delivering the power that Ford promised.

I guess I'm confused.... I was told at the shop that my motor is DOHC not a single.... Above you stated that the 4.6 GT was single???? Is that an error??? I also would like to replace my engine with a cobra's.... just curious about the SOHC and DOHC thing though...
