Why do they call the 87-93 Mustangs Foxs?

Recently a buddy of mine was asking what GT meant and also why the 87-93 mustangs were called Foxs.I thought this would be a good question for you history buffs.When you find out post it up!You ll be surprised as to why it was called the Fox.

The 79-93s are referred to as Foxes because they are based on the Fox platform.
I have no idea why Ford chose to use "Fox" to refer to the platform, but they do also have the "Panther" platform which was used by larger cars (Crown Vic, Town Car, Grand Marquis). |

my guess just cut the running lights on and look at your fox in the dark it looks very much like a sly and quick fox!!!!!!!!! its hard to catch a fox!! |

In the beginning they were going to call it the "Gumby" platform but they got sued so they had to go with the closest thing, "Fox"

the platform for the 79-86 was the "fox3". 87-93 was the "fox4", which was basically the same thing, but stiffer.

The Foxs were coming out of the assembly lines like foxes coming out of a hole.

From what I've read, the 79-93 is actually the Fox-3. Fox-4 is just another name for the SN95 platform.
Plus, I really don't think there were any changes to the actual chassis in '87, although there were some improvements to the suspension components. |

It tried to, but on first launch with the little v6 it twisted the frame like whoah took 'em 3 tries before they got it to be somewhat rubbery instead of 'bend in half'able
