My cars got 86k 04 automatic 3.9l. I bought my car new w/ 14.00 miles and I haven't change my trans oil. Is this something I can do...any tutorial/guide out there? Anything I should know? Are trans oil coolers worth the buck? Did I take to long to change it? What is the model that I have? Is it 4r70w (something like that) or the AOD or the AODE or are all these the same...please explain. Thanks

wow, 84k on the stock fluid... lol you should change it in an auto every year (people on here probably think every other year but whatever...)
When you flush it flush ALL OF IT. You will have to drain the TQ converter to get it all. This means you will probably have to suck it up and get someone to do it. To just drain/fill you pull the pan and let it drain out (no drain plug ftl...) just back off all of the bolts a tad then back off the ones on the back (if the front of the car is jacked up) and let the fluid drain out of the back end.
Once trained remove the pan and change the filter. Put the pan back on and fill her up. Turn the car on cycle through all of the gears a few times as it takes a bit to get the fluid going so the car will change gears. It takes a good bit of fluid as well.
Heat is the number 1 killer of autos so a good trans cooler upgrade will be a nice item.

My local ford dealer does a complete flush for 120 out the door. Not too bad, and it saves me the trouble. I would definitely recommend getting a complete flush, especially with that many miles.

I had it done for 20 bucks. The guy just unbolted the pan off, let it drain, put filter and that was it. Pretty easy I'll do it myself next time and I'll definitely not let it go that far next time. I don't think it was a complete flush where you drain the oil out of the torque converter. I didn't do it cuz the guy at the auto supply shop said if it were for maintenance I would need 5 or 6 quarts. It used up 5 1/2 quarts.
