loud grinding noise!

i have this weird grinding noise coming from what sounds like my transmission(5speed). its only when the car is cold or hasnt been run for about 12 hours, its fine through all the gears but when i put in 5th (usually on the highway) i get this loud kind of grinding coming from a little bit in front of the shifter. it will also do it for few seconds if i pull it into neutral. if i leave it in fifth gear it will take about 5-10 min to stop depending on how cold it is. it did this before only for about 2 or 3 seconds in fifth gear before i got rearended a few weeks back now its just about every time i drive it for the first 5-10 min. if someone could help me i would greatly appreciate it. thanx aaron.

If you were rearended, I would definately take it to a shop. You didn't say if you had a 5 spd or auto or if you had a short shifter or not. What about stock clutch? What year is your car? There are plenty of variables. Some of the info I asked would help A LOT.

does it sound like wet rocks in a tumbler?
i have a slight noise in 4th and 5th gears coming from the shifter area (tranny) that sounds like above, but i know its just the beautiful sounds of the tremec 3650.
what year GT do you have?

Thanks for all of the info. My car is a 2004 Mustang GT, 40th Anniversary edition. It has a short shifter and stock clutch. The noise sounds like a rattle or grinding noise. It still makes the noise when in neutral at high speeds. Almost sounds like what air bubbles would sound like going through a tube. When the car heats up, it goes away!?? I have had the car repaired after the rearend incident - new rear bumper and cosmetic repairs. No frame damage noted. The autobody and performance shop could not hear the noise when they had it - typical! Any ideas out there?

i doubt it would be anything related to the accident if the only things they replaced were the bumper and mere exterior parts.
if its grinding noise when the car is in neutral as well, its something to do with the driveline anywhere from your gearbox to the rear wheels.
just to let you know, the output shaft of the tranny still spins while in neutral because it is still connected to the driveline which is still moving with the car. my tranny makes the "wet rocks in tumbler" noise if i go into neutral on the freeway as well.

its an 04 and i did just put a tri-ax on it, that pretty much describes the sound "wet rocks in a tumbler". it just got worse after the accident, it would do it for a couple seconds before but now it takes about 10 min to go away.it just sounded to me like something was grinding against something else, i didnt want to wear anything down or damage the transmission so i was a little worried.

I know this is an old post, but I am having a similar or maybe the same problem. I just installed a Pro 5.0 short shifter on my 03 GT. The sound only happens when I hit 5th gear, I have no idea what rocks sounds like in a tumbler....but I would describe the sound I am hearing as more between a grinding and a rubbing. It seems to me I gave the stick plenty of clearance around the stop bolts in all gears. Just wanted to make sure I am not ruining my transmission, I am a little paranoid. If anybody has any experience with this and can help me out I would appreciate it! Thanks!

If the noise you are talking about is what I am thinking of it is just the shifter tunnel noise, part of it... you can get a shifter gasket to help or you can upgrade to a shifter that doesnt transmit the noise as much like MGW. Since our shifters sit right on the tranny some noise can come through. You probably only notice it in 5th because you are accelerating at other times and plus 5th is a smaller gear and the way you go into it offers more chance for noise to transmit.
You actually dont need shift stops in your car... they wont help really as the tranny is built with some internal. The only reason I would use them is if I was a hard core drag racer. I would check the stops to double check that you are not close to them in any gear just to be safe.
