I always understood that a panhard bar was best suited to road track cars, maybe spector could chime in here

Yeah, the panhard helps control the lateral movement of the rear-end. So, it's not very helpful for straight line traction. It does make a big difference in cornering though, because the upper control arms alone are not very effective at controlling this movement. Reason being that with the stock suspension design, the upper control arms are responsible for controlling both the lateral movement of the rear-end as well as rotation or "wind-up" of the rear.
A torque arm, however, controls axle wind-up and helps to eliminate wheel hop. With a panhard and torque arm both, the upper control arms are eliminated entirely. The panhard then is solely responsible for lateral movement, and the torque arm is soley responsible for wind-up.
I suggest you go to Maximum Motorsports :: The Leader In Mustang Performance Suspensions and read-up on some of the tech info they have for each of the parts. Also note that if you do decide to go with a torque arm and panhard combo, you'll need to make sure that the LCAs you are using do not cause the suspension to bind.

the stock design of the mustang rear is rather poor, The upper control arms are not really mounted side to side to more better control the side to side movement of the rear end and the lower control arms are not very good and keeping the front to back movment from happening either. Ford did all this due to they didnt want to design anything new (same chassis since forever) and the rubber more flexible bushings ride easier.
This of course allows the rear to jump around much more than it should causing very bad driving characteristics as well as very dangerous unable to predict handling senarios.
A panhard bar basically bolts to the frame and uses a long bar bolted to the axle (lca area) of the drivers side of the car (generally) it just keeps the rear from doing any side to side movment.
This solves a good bit of the issues BUT you are still going to have issues with the front to back movment. A tq arm will help with this, it bolts to the frame and controls the front to back movment.
A panhard bar will definatly help your handling in keeping the rear in line with the frame and keep it from stepping out on you. You will start to notice your car having more of an understeer problem with the panhard bar (not huge just more than before)
with a tq arm and panhard the rear suspension will stay planted better than the front in corners.
The exhaust might be to low as it goes over the axle and might hit the panhard bar so you may have fitment issues with this~ they say dynomax axle back loops will clear~ or a good shop can fab up something.
They are well worth the cash if you are going to do more than just it, such as springs, struts/shocks/ etc. Go with maximum motorsports for your suspension needs.

Is a panhard bar a single replacement for a Watts link and rear sway bar?
Which is better?

Do Mustangs' rear suspensions not have a panhard bar from the factory?

I've got the Kenny Brown Trac-Kit plus and I think it works great.
