i'm new have ??? about tires

so how big of tires can you put on a 1968 mustang with having to change anything?

If you don't want to change anything either a 7" or 8" is about as wide as you can go, if memory serves. If I was lucky enough to own a 67 I'd get a set of old school Torque Thrust wheels by American Mags. Take a look at this site to see them. BULLITT Mustang news

I have a set of 265 50 15's on the rear and 225 50 15's on the front of my ride, all mounted on Americans, simulated bead-lock. No problem here with clearance and no mods...

Here's some data on the wheels and tires if ti will help:
Wheels/Tires from Pep Boys
- Rear wheels; 15x10 AR 73, stock #735165 ... Front 15x7 AR 73, stock #735765

- Tires; Rear = Futura GLS P265/50R15 ... Front = Futura GLS P225/50R15

When these were bought and installed ( May of 99), wheels went for $63 rear and 46 front {each} , tires $57 each... not a bad investment for a good looking set of wheels and tires...

Hey guy's, I know this post is from January but I thought I'd answer anyway. I have a 68' coupe with no mods done to the wheel openings. I wanted that 60's & 70's look with thin tires in the front and fat tires in the back. Here in New York state, my rear tires cannot stick out past the wheel opening, so I went with 14X8" weld wheels (four lug) all the way around. I put P205/70R14's in the front and P245/60R14's in the rear. View my Mustang to see the outcome. My only complaint is the rear tires rub the chrome trim I added around the wheel openings. And that only happens when both of my kids are in the back seat and I go over a railroad crossing. I think I can roll the trim upwards inside the wheel opening and fix that problem though. The other thing is, my rear leaf springs are weak from age and I need to replace the shocks. After these tires were on my car and I looked up underneath it...I think I could have ordered a one inch backspace on the rear rims to accomodate another inch to inch and a half of tire without a problem.

You can get 10's under there if the offset is right. Usually means a custom made set. Rolling the edge's isn't too hard. If you don't want to replace the rear sagging leafs you can always put air shocks or coilovers. If one leaf is sagging more then the other, put each air shock on its own air line and you can adjust them individual.

A cheap set of Shock Extensions will help raise the rear by about an inch and a half, helping for clearance problems with wider tires...
I have air-shocks with 3 inch shock extensions on the bottom ends of my shocks; with the 265's in the rear, I seldom bottom out, causing tire rub in the inner fender well. I maintain about 90 pounds of air in the shocks, making the ride comfy - with no body roll on sharp turns... but then that's my preference.
