Winding Road » Archive » First Look - Restyled For 2009 Ford Mustang!!
 |
 |
 |
Quote:
With the Dodge Charger and Chevrolet Camaro set to once again heat up the muscle car scene, Ford is preparing a comprehensive restyling for its 2009 Mustang, of which this is the first spotted prototype.
Our boys and gals at KGP Photography had but a split-second to grab this mule, which appears to have taken on a lot of design cues from the Los Angeles Auto Show Giugiaro Mustang Concept show car.
(Click through for more shots, a side-by-side comparison with the Giugiaro, and musings from KGP!)

Quote:
Ford has begun testing prototypes for its 2009 Mustang, which appears
to be destined for a serious mid-cycle makeover. We spotted this
prototype in heavy traffic for all of ten seconds, and managed a
drive-by photo-blitz as the ‘Stang passed by. With only mere seconds
to take in the design as the stop light turned green, the first word
that came to mind was “Giugiaro.” It seems that that first
impression may have been justified, after analyzing the photos once
the dust (and traffic) cleared.
Putting these spy shots up next to pix of the Giugiaro Mustang
concept that originally debuted at the LA Auto Show, we see some
definite similairities between the front-clips of these two cars.
The hoodline on this prototype shares the graceful arc of the Italian-
inspired show car, and a similar wheel arch appears to reside beneath
the camouflage. A sharp, angled character line also appears to be
visible on the prototype’s front bumper, and its angle and placement
matches the Giugiaro concept’s nose detail to a T.
A Giugiaro adaptation of the Mustang would seem more at home at a
venue like the Geneva Motor Show–Italdesign’s usual stomping
grounds–so the fact that it debuted in LA and is currently gracing
the Ford display at auto show in Detroit has raised some eyebrows,
and has begun rumors that the show car’s cues might just be on tap
for the next-gen Mustang. Those rumblings now appear to have plenty
of merit behind them. Now we’re eager to see a prototype that
represents more than an early front-end mule. To see how much of the
Giugiaro concept’s overall shape will be incorporated into the
refreshed ‘09 Mustang is now the next big question. With fierce
competition coming from the new Camaro and Challenger, the facelifted
Mustang may just need show car looks to keep pace.

I don't think those two front ends resemble each other AT ALL. The rest of the car looks just the same. In the 4th pic, the curve(in the shape of a lower case reversed r) doesn't match the one on the concept around the driver side headlight area. I really hope they don't stick with the orange concept car. Looks too camaro like for me. They still need to lower it, lighten it up, and shrink it.

Not saying the 05's can't look good, just don't prefer a stocker.

Look at these two cars even with the wrap on you can see the lines and shape of the bumper are close. Not bad but it will be a few more years before they make big changes. Christ how long did it take to get a new platform.

I traded in my ranger for a 2000 GT when I was told we needed a more family oriented vehicle. A mustang is just as much a family car as a fusion...complete with car seat tie downs and all.

I think they should really just work on the rear of the stang, it loses it's muscle awesomeness towards the ass of the car where it gets all stumpy and frumpy.

to me that "new 09 concept" doesn't look all that much different from my 05. The difference between the design on that concept car is similiar to the differences between the 94-98 mustangs and the 99-04 mustangs. They are basically the same car with the body lines changed a little bit. To me that's not a significant change at all...
on a side note, for all of you S197 haters, you can pucker up and kiss mine jfwy..but honestly, I had an SN95 before this and the 197 is far and away a better car looks wise to me. but to each his own...My only dissatisfaction with the 05 is the fact that it weighs a ton...or more like 2 tons to be exact.

I love my 06 GT the whole design is made to be retro. & the concept front end doesn't do that. the front end doesn't need any work. it looks like the car it was made to mimic. the rear is a different story. it could use some improvement. if you don't like the s197 thats your problem. and guess what it the best thing that happened to the mustang in the last 20 years. personally i think the 99-04 look, drive, & rattle like sh!t. but I don't go talking a bunch of trash about the car cause I'm out numbered on this site. And if you don't like that we can go to the track and watch my 06 smoke your ass

honestly, i welcome the change.. but I don't understand why they haven't done anything with the rear yet... thats the part that needs the change. in my opinion, the front was fine... it is the rear that is holding me back from wanting one.

I was thinking the same, I like the current stang as well though...but I would love to see the Mach look incorporated into a mustang design. That would really set it off.
But wiarumus, if I was in front of you driving I would be scared knowing you were into REARends this much ( j/k )
I dont think the design they are working up looks all that great and those pictures are kinda hard to tell what they are trying to hide, I dont see much of a change myself.
But this concept will change almost 10x over, i work in the Automotive division of sorts, and they will change it 10x over by the time they decide on what the public will drop money into to make the vehicle go forward!

Seems they have a scoop similar to the KR under the blanket. Bump goes across the front of the hood. That would be a nice addition. GGBIW
