I am about to get new rims on my 05. I wanna go with a 245 45 18 in the front and a 255 45 18 in the back. Does anyone see any downside or reason that this wouldn't work.

why would you want a tire on the back of your car thats only 10 mm wider, thats less than a quarter of an inch per side, thats not even noticable. I wouldnt do that. If you are going to stagger tire sizes then at least raise the rear size by 30mm.
What size rims are on the car, and what is the stock tire size? I will need to know this before I can tell you if those size choices will work.

Its a 18 x 7.5 rim. What would be a noticeable size difference and good fit. The stock tire size is a 215 65 16.

The mustang is a rear wheel drive car. For a rim that is 7.5 inches wide I would probably run a 245mm wide tire, any wider will be to much for the 7.5 inches. A stock 8 inch wide mustang rim (on GT's for example in pre 04 years) run 245/45/17 tires.

What are front wheel drive cars? I really hope you didn't just say your 05 mustang is FWD...hoping it is the lack of food today that made me read that wrong...

Apparently I am confusing my cars today. Maybe it is lack of food on my end. Maybe I'll stick to airplanes. The stock tire is a 215 65 16.

So I should just forget staggering the tire and go with a 245. The place I am buying my rims says it will work but then again they don't own a Mustang.

Well, it is one of us that hasn't eaten...I had to go get a snickers to make sure. lol
For future reference, mustangs are RWD not FWD.
On a 7.5" rim, you might as well go with the same size all the way around...which I think you said was a 245 you were looking at. Kyle on here runs 245s on his and they are fine. A 255 won't have any noticeable difference visually or drive wise...so there is no real sense in taking away the ability to rotate your tires.

check tire prices online, dont let a shop charge you a ton of money for tires, they ship to you in two days generally (from tirerack.com) and the money you save in taxes pays for shipping, then you just take them to the shop and have them mounted.
