replacing fuel pump

hey guys, gonna be replacing my fuel pump soon. looked underneath to see what i'd be dealing with. i saw where i need to take out the bolts where the gas tube(?) goes up to the fuel door on the quarter panel. now, where that same tube goes into the tank itself, i didn't see any bolts holding it in. looks like it just goes through a rubber grommit. can i just unbolt those top bolts & lower the tank, or do i have to take that tube all the way out? does it just pull out from the tank? have changed an intank pump before, just not on a mustang. appreciate any help.

The easiest way I've found to drop the gas tank is to drop the 2 "straps" holding the tank on, they run under the tank, one on the passenger side, one on the driver side. You then have to start disconnecting fuel lines and other assorted lines, be sure to label everything, until the gas tank is free. Then I pulled the neck from the tank being careful to not break the rubber seal they use.

From there you pull the assembly out of the gas tank, the pump is in the assembly (sending unit, floater, regulator, etc). It's a pain to get the thing back in correctly so be sure you remember how it went in. The fuel pump is in there, very small thing considering what it's all in.

Just be sure to take your time and it's pretty straight forward coming out.

thanks lowflyn. was looking at a haynes manual as a reference. didn't mention anything about that tube going into the tank.(imagine that.) like i said, i've changed an intank pump before. just not a mustang. they say it's a different pump in 98. have to replace the whole unit. figures i'd get that one. oh well. nothin' but nuts & bolts. thanks again dude.

I'm not sure if that was the way I was supposed to do it, but after taking my trunk apart and looking at everything, that was the only way I could see the filler neck possibly coming out of the tank.

hey, whatever works. ford wants 300.00 for a new pump. screw that. o'reillys auto parts wants around 200.00. guess i'll go with that one. cars. gotta love em.

I paid a little over 200 for the entire assembly for my car from O'reilly's. Go ahead and buy a new fuel filter while you are at it.

i replaced the filter about 2 years ago. i don't put many miles on my car at all. i live about 5 miles from work. this thing will be paid off this april. thank God! car payments suck! it's got 121,500 miles. still runs good though. thinkin about havin the heads ported. (with a engine rebuild of course) gotta get this engine to make some power. anyway, thanks again.

If you wanna make power throw the stock heads away and do a pi swap if you havent already.

read an article recently on sn95forums .com about porting my npi heads plus, i can't recall what else. saved the article though. i beleive the thread is called the truth about npi & pi heads. good article. check it out & see what you think. thanks for your input though.

well i found a set of pi heads here in bristol for 300 with 35,000 miles on them you would need the intake too for the true gain.I just suggested that because its the cheapest most effective mod we 96-98 guys can do.

that's a good deal dude. i would have jumped on that too. ain't no such good deals here in maryville. did the 300 include the intake?

nope but the intake was only $75 he may still have them i bought a complete PI motor for $500 if you would like i can check around for you

Be more than happy too if you do the pi swap you will soon realize the non pi heads suck

already realize....i'm kinda intimidated about swapping soch heads. haven't done those. not too difficult is it?
