Not necessarily, they just needed something to to produce the 1.21 gigawatts (which was pronounced wrong, thanks to some idiot consultant on the movie) since they didn't have any access to plutonium. Which is also why Doc got the Delorean converted to Mr. Fusion in the future, thus fixing the need for plutonium (hard to acquire) and lightning (hard to harness).

If the movie was recorded today, they'd have got it right. Thanks to computer memory capacity, storage capacity, and clock speeds now in the giga range, everybody knows that prefix. In 1985...they were a long way a away.
