with 18's, you aren't going to be able to protect them with sidewall height..you can't have them tall enough to make the rim higher than the curb without modifications. You protect them using the width of the tire...so if you're looking to put the smallest width that can fit on there, your rims are going to get rashed out the wazoo unless you stay faaar away from curbs. Honestly i'd recommend CORRECTLY sized tires, not too small..and in your case, not too big.
