K so my headers sounded aweful come to find out the bolts came loose. Apparently this is what will happen all the time Im told. So I'll have to check them about every month and tighten them. So I got them retightend. I bought the copper gaskets becuase I heard they were the best ones and wont blow off as easy. It still sounds like its leaking. Someone said that headers heat up alot and will kind of make the copper melt so that it forms a better seal around the header so it wont leak but that it takes a month or two. Another guy that worked at heads and headers said he doesnt use gaskets he grinds them flat and never has a problem with them leaking. Any suggestions ????????

Having to retighten headers a few times is normal. Usually only takes a time or two to get them good.

There is also a kit where you can get "locking" header bolts to where they won't slip loose over time. They're like 45 bucks or so through summit, worth it IMO.

on the 5.0 they're just bolts that come with clips that rest against the tubes of the headers, that keep the bolts (with slots for the clips) from turning past a certain point, they're cake to put on and cake to remove

When I put shorties on my '02 I torqued them to spec and never had another issue -> my 5.0 the headers came loose twice, lost two bolts entirely before I got the summit bolts; haven't had a problem since

I used loc-tite red on my header bolts, haven't had a problem with those that go into the heads. the collector bolts on the other hand, those I have lost a few times just going down the road and all the sudden massive exhaust leak.

If they came with lock washers try to put a hardened washer between the lock washer and the header flange. Also what you can do, and this is from my Aircraft experience. you will need bolts with Safety wire holes in the head, and what you can do is safety wire the two opposing bolts around the heads so that when one loosens it tightens the other one. I am going to try this with my headers depending on how much room i got. You don't need alot of room to do it. Here is a pic of three bolts in-line. Notice how if one loosens it tightens the other and vice-versa.

I WOULD NEVER USE LOCTITE ON HEADER BOLTS. This can eventually cause the header bolt to stick inside the head permanently and then you'd have to remove the heads to drill out the bolt, retap the hole and hope that you didn't tap the hole wrong(awaiting jokes) and cause misalignment with the hole on the header. I would never recommend using any sort of loctite on any part that involves the engine/heads/intake/etc.

Ive never had problems with the bolts coming out. I always tightened them as tigh as i could get them on the flanges, on the heads just torque them to spec
