Before Monroe County Court Judge Richard A. Keenan ordered Wilkins to prison for 1 1/3 to four years for third-degree rape, Wilkins said she falsely confessed and wasn't around when Miguel A. Colon raped her daughter in their Rochester home.
"I don't know what everyone is trying to pull, but it's a lie," said Wilkins, who wore a red T-shirt emblazoned with the words "#1 Mom" when she appeared in court for her arraignment last year.
As Wilkins stood for sentencing in a drab burgundy jail uniform, Keenan rejected her claim of innocence and turned down her attempt to withdraw her guilty plea.
"Your statements to the court today ring hollow, and I don't believe them," Keenan said.
Assistant District Attorney Kristina Karle said Wilkins, 32, disregarded maternal instincts by allowing her daughter to have sex with Colon.
"This woman was put on this earth to love and protect her child," Karle said. "I hope that she spends every day in her jail cell remembering what she did."
Wilkins admitted lying in bed next to her daughter while Colon, 42, engaged in sexual acts with the girl from January to July 2006.
She told police she sometimes joined in on the acts, which her daughter invited, "because I didn't want him to hurt her."
The charges state the girl was too young to give consent.
Karle told Keenan that the girl, who is now in foster care and has a different last name, wept on her shoulder after testifying to grand jurors.
"She said, 'Kitty, what they did to me was wrong,'" Karle said. "At the time she did it, she didn't understand it was wrong. All she knew was that her mother gave her blessing to it."
