question on an engine swap

I am wondering what i will have to do to go from a 351W to a 429? I know the 70 came with a 429 in the boss but am not sure if the shock towers were positioned different? Im hoping all i need is different mounts

I believe the shock towers are the same. If i'm not mistaken, all you will need is the motormounts to go from a SBF to a 385 series block(429/460).

You'll need a bellhousing for a 429/460 if it's a standard tranny. Your 351 is a small block pattern if i'm correct.

You do realize Ford started putting big block in mustangs from the FACTORY starting in 67 right? So why is he going to have to move the firewall in a car that the unibody is the EXACT same as one that came with a big block from the same year model.......

Plus, holy old post batman.... Everything thing will work fine, hell, they even make aftermarket headers now that BOLT on and aren't too big of a deal to mess with as far as reaching the spark plugs.

Just remember that the big block that came in '67 was a 390 S-code, not the 385-series 429/460. The Boss 429 was a totally different animal with huge heads and therefore the shock towers were heavily modified.

Crites Restoration Products has many of the parts you'd need for the swap. I have '67 fastback and a 460 that will be wedged into the engine bay when done. Using a 351W- based engine would save alot of headaches, weigh less, and give more transmission options, but I just want a monster engine, maybe a 514 by the time it's said and done.

One thing to consider is that even though the engine will fit in the engine bay, unless the shock towers are trimmed or eliminated by using a Mustang II type conversion, somthing as simple as changing the plugs might require lifting the engine from the mounts.

When i had a 460 in my 69, i had headers with 2 1/8" primary's. Changing plugs was an all day afair.
