well on mildly modded naturally aspirated setups, youll want to try to find the max amount of timing advance with the leanest fuel ratio. what a tuner will do is he will add timing and take out fuel till he finds the "Edge" of the tune, the point at which exhaust gases get too hot (leaner burns hotter and melts pistons) or if the car has a knock sensor, you get predetonation/knock, in which case youve found the edge. the tuner will then back away and add his safety margin to compensate for atmospheric conditions.
