just picked up this weekend:
1990 Eclipse GSX for 900$
Pro's:
Awd
4g63
all options (abs, sunroof, cruise control, etc)
AC works awesome
interior is one of the cleanest ive seen for a 17 year old car
Cons:
cracked windshield
skipped timing sending valves into pistons
cv boots need replacing
dented drivers front fender/broken headlight cover/top of headlight popup dented.
It runs, but its pretty horrid sounding, i had to trailer it back from san fran back to the central valley, let me tell you, towing a 3800lb vehicle with a 500lb trailer in a pussy shit 2006 Tahoe through the thickest parts of bay area traffic was enough to make the truckers that stop in at our work go "man, you got balls!"
friday night started the teardown of the head, timing looked ok but i wanted to take the head off anyways to install some ARP studs and a multi-layer head gasket so i can run up to 30psi without worry. NONE of the bolts we encountered have ever been removed, this car was definately never touched mod wise, still had all the crayon marks on all the hoses and bolts and they all lined up, so the teardown went pretty slow, had to use breaker bars on most of the bolts. a few of the exhaust manifold studs broke off in the head, so we had to keep the exhaust on when removing the head, meaning we had to take off the turbo to manifold bolts, and the one stud broke off, which made getting the head off tricky, but finally it came off.
i just ordered:
-Stainless Steel exhaust manifold studs
-SBR Cast Exhaust manifold (same one i had on the GST) since its 200$ and comes with the turbo gasket and manifold gasket, both a 50$ value, and the old manifold was cracked
-ARP Head Stud kit
-Mitsu Multi Layer Gasket
once i get it back running i need to smog it so i can register it, then i will fix the axles and windshield, and start gathering up all my support mods to run a GT35R.
and yes, i totally concur, it looks like a piece of shit. and it will stay that way for quite some time, that way cops wont pull me over since theyll feel bad i drive a POS.

yeah i dont know the actual weight, though the awd stuff alone weights 500lbs almost (rear, transfercase, etc). when people do the awd swap on a 2g spyder those are around the 3800 mark if i recall.
but the guy at the uhaul said the trailer weights 500lbs, cause when i dropped it off he was like "aight now drive it around and back it into its spot" and i was like "do i really have to? cant we just detach it and move it ourselves?" cause i suck at backing up trailers, "nope, that sucker weighs in at 500, good luck with that". i dont know how valid his accusation was but oh well.
same bolt pattern
just about. i sold the bike (some guy offered me 1300 for it so i was like "umm ok!" and sold my gear for another 400$) so i need something to tinker around with, and i already know basically everything about these cars. after its running i will prolly just build up like $3k and go apeshit with mods, so yeah, if i cut my frivolous spending that number will be in the bank in about 2 months, which means no coffee in the morning, no fast food for lunch.
getting it running reliably is the first goal though, i want to spend under 2k$ to get it road worthy and ready. i couldve bought one already running for around 1500$ but wheres the fun in that plus finding one that has actually never been modded is a rarity, like ive always said, you dont want to buy someone elses mistakes.

nah only when you abuse them or ghetto rig parts. thats why right off the bat i want to fix/replace all the standard wear items and items most dsm'ers overlook, like cmon, arp studs and a head gasket? nobody does that for a first mod, but a month after getting the car cause they ran 20psi on a 17 year old car and then cried cause their head gasket blew. the dsm mantra is "Power, Reliability, Cheap, Pick two" you can have power and reliability but it wont be cheap, you can have power for cheap but it wont be reliable, or you can have reliability for cheap but it wont have power. because i never cheaped out on the GST the only time it was in the shop was for the time it got rear ended, the timing belt job (which i can now do myself) and the clutch (which i can also now do myself, but its a pita and i dont have patience for trannies), and the only time it was down was when it was getting built up. and its even better now, cause i can take my time knowing ill still have a car to drive to work, so i can do everything 110%.

too bad i have a 6bolt motor............ thatd hurt me if i had a 2g, 90-92 turbo dsm's have whats referred to as a 6bolt motor, stronger rods and better design than the 7bolt (92-99) that have walked, and even then, a good majority are only 7bolts from 95-96 and only in FWD form, nary a awd have walked. besides, the entire time ive belonged to the dsm site, ive seen 3 actual accounts of CW, all three were fwd 95-96 models. knew a guy who swore he had the walk, but it was his crank pulley separating. btw the guy who made the first pic with the silver gst now has a built 2.4l with a FP3065.
sucks now since its just a waiting game for parts. SBR has my order processing, but even if they get it out tomorrow itll be another week till it gets here. i might attempt the ABS delete, i hear alot of people have issues with the abs in the 1g's and delete it altogether, i dont know if i want to leave it just cause i havent driven a non-abs car since my 74 mustang which didnt have power brakes either. though tomorrow i might try to pull the dents on the drivers side fender and the top of the pop up headlight just so it looks a bit better at first glances.
