3.8l Engine - Compare Notes....

Can someone check the front of their V6 for me? I'm troubleshooting a coolant leak on my 1996 Mustang, and I think it is coming from between the timing cover and the block.

Please look at your engine, at the bottom pulley on the crankshaft. Look at the 9 o'clock and 10 o'clock position on your harmonic balancer, about 1 to 2 inches from the harmonic balancer - are there two bolts that hold the timing cover to the engine? I have two large holes there and it looks like they had bolts in them at one time. My engine looks like it is leaking there.

My engine is missing #1 and #2 on the front cover. I'll check with Mr Ford in the morning for replacements.

I noticed them when I was doing my head/cam install. Those bolts were missing from my cover too.

The haynes manual never mentioned them so I just relied on the black RTV sealant to do its job.

I havent had a leak since the install some 11 months ago.

Here's 2 pictures of my engine right there for comparison. I'm not missing them.

This is an 02 for the record.


In this one the top of the engine is to the right. Best angle I could get on it.


In this one the top of the engine is the top right corner.

Do these help any or do I need to take some more?
