I've been looking for a GT for awhile and told myself that the only thing I wanted to mod right away was the shifter. I was planning on buying a MGW shifter. Well I bought a GT this weekend and it already has a Pro 5.0 shifter. I've gathered that the MGW is by far everyones recommendation but is it worth it to pay $180-$200 to switch to the MGW from the pro 5.0?

In my personal opinion, I say yes because you can then sell your pro 5.0 and make a little of it back. However, I have never had the pro 5.0 so I can't speak from experience, but I know a lot have gone from it to MGW and were very glad they did. I went from Tri-Ax to MGW...and I am a very happy camper.

And, you don't need to worry about a shifter till you figure out what tranny you want to put in it.

it depends on how you look at it. lets say you had the stock shifter, you would then spend 180~ for the MGW shifter and put it in, then you would have a stock shifter on your shelf gathering dust.
In your case you can buy the mgw and sell the 5.0 and make cash so... your actually better off now than you would have been if you had the stock shifter

Greenpony02,
I've had a Pro 5.0 on my Tremec 3550 in my Fox and it was excellent. The shifter throw was like a toggle switch.
I changed to a Hurst because it's a nostallgia thing with old guys like me. You may change to another shifter for the same reason, but I can't see how you could do better than the Pro 5.0 as far a function goes.
My only complaint was the short handle which didn't allow me enough leverage for flat out speed shifting. That could have been fixed with a longer handle, though.
Good luck,
Jim

How do you spell "nostalgia"? Does spelling count?

Pro 5.0 is what im rocking and i love it....i would say drive with it and see what you think about it....if you like it, keep it....if not go with the MGW....for what i've gathered, the 2 shifters that people like the most are the pro 5.0 and mgw.

Thats the thing, I'm relatively new to manuals and actually have never driven a manual mustang before this one. So I don't have anything to compare it to. Thats why I figured I'd ask and hear what others with experience in the difference have to say. So far it seems like i'll stick with the pro 5.0 but maybe i'll change my mind. Thanks to all that have replied with their thoughts so far.

I've had both a Pro 5.0 and a MGW on the '90. I personally liked the Pro 5.0 a bit better due to the stronger springs and slightly shorter shift. The MGW was a little smoother and had a more comfortable handle though. It just depends on your personal preference.

The Pro 5.0 is a harder reach than the MGW or Steeda is. Thats the main reason I dont like it.

Can I say here that I have a practically new Pro 5.0 for a Tremec 3550 for $100?
