3.8 vs 4.0 mustang

I have a friend that wants to get a V6 mustang. Insurance and costs keep him from a GT or Cobra. He doesn't know whether to get a 99-04 V6 with the 3.8, or a 05-07 with the 4.0. Is there a big difference between the two engines? Does the " four 0" have noticable power over "the edge" 3.8?

i've got a 3.9, its the best of the old body style + a smidge better than the 3.8, and insurance is no that bad at all, and i'm 18 = /. i would base it off the body style he likes personally.

A 3.9 is a 3.8 with minivan parts. Now that that is out of the way....
The 4.0 is a stronger engine, with just a few supporting mods you will be running with 99-04 GT's.
The downside to a 4.0 V6 is that these are the 05+ cars and are more expensive in both price and insurance.

the 3.8 is the same as the 3.9 in terms of performance~ for price its cheaper and the aftermarket is more advanced for the 3.8. The 4.0 is faster and in the newer style.
The 99-04 run mid 15s stock with a manual tranny (do NOT buy an auto...) with the 05 running a bit better and possibly hitting high 14s stock.

you say do not buy an auto, but don't the tuners benefit an auto more than a manual?

Now you are really going to be motivating kyle to pull you down the highway.
However, I was going to say the same thing.

They only benefit autos because they change the shift characteristics...they don't make them gain more power...just shift harder.
He said do not buy an auto because of the parasitic loss that comes with the auto trans...and the fact that if you want to have any kind of fun, you pretty much require a tuner...where as a manual, the fun comes standard.

Haha, nothing bad meant by it. The 3.9 actually shows a 1 to 2 hp increase over the 3.8. I've just been in too many arguments about this.

When I was looking at insurance prices it was cheaper for me to get my 99 cobra then an 05 v6.
All the 05-07 v6 mustangs I've seen cost more then 99-04 GT's. I don't see how it would be cheaper to get the newer body style unless it has lots of miles on it.

dont listen to the hype............a 3.9 is the best engine created
and hell, with my mods and an 05 auto w/ the same mods (- the udp) only pulls about a car on me from 0-90
and my car can keep up decently with a 99-04 auto GT..........ask rob oh and rob, we need to run from a dig

a 4.0 is stronger stock in terms of power and responds better to basic boltons.......but in the long run, the 3.8/3.9 is a stronger motor as far as reliability

I have to disagree with Kyle. The 4.0 is a proven engine.
If I had the choice, I wouldn't choose 04 or 05 based on the engine. I would base my decision on which body style you like better.
Choosing between an 04 or 05 V6 mustang for power is like choosing between a pink or a purple poodle...neither one is really worth it.

from what i heard from mustang forum members that work for ford, youre right. its more effecient, responds better to boltons, and has more power stock. but in the long run, the pushrod is more reliable and can take more stress. when ford tweaked the 4.0 and tested the performance, it was too close to a GT according to the test so they made the intake, stock tune, and exhaust way too restrictive. the previous years werent as restricted.
they dont really have more power, they just have better gearing, especially in the autos.............they make 17 more crank hp and heavier.....that 5-speed auto is what makes it quick
