Hey all. It's about that time...for new shocks/struts and all that fun stuff. I just had a few quick questions. How does the stock suspension on the Bullit model mustang compare to other after market suspension packages out there? Is it more suite for a comfortable ride, or performance and handling?
Also, is something I can do myself? I do most of the work on my car myself anyway(brakes, oil changes, etc...).
Any other info regarding inexpensive suspension setups would be greatly appreciated.

The Bullitt setup is a good compromise between comfort and performance. It's also cheap, so it's great if you're on a budget. If you aren't looking for an all-out performance handling set-up (i.e. you're never gonna autocross it), the Bullitt parts are a great way to go.
You shouldn't have any problem doing it yourself. It's pretty straight-forward stuff, especially in the rear. You also may want to consider throwing some caster camber plates on while you are doing the front struts. That makes the install a little more complicated, but it's still doable with minimal experience. |

how much better performance wise are they from the stock v6 package?

If you are going for cheap but good upgrades do your suspension then buy some ford C springs, MM lower control arms, MM full length sub frame connectors, and some mach1 tokicos.
You will probably notice a 15-20% better feel to the car and a good 10-15% better overall ability to handle in the car.

Why ya need a tower brace and swaybar?
and what would be the reasoning to get new caster chamber plates?

You dont need a strut tower, they just stiffen up the car that much more, especially on the 99-04 cars. Caster Camber plates are to allow you get a perfect alignment and should be considered for anything more than a 1-1/4" drop. The only thing I dont really like about the bullitt setup is that its not low enough. It doesn't even lower the car a full inch, and we all know Mustangs need as much help as they can get in the lowering department.

would I be better off getting the package minus the springs(shocks/struts, swaybars,) and get a different set of springs?

I liked my bullitt suspension. Made the car feel totally different. It was definitely a huge change. It didn't lower it too much but was enough to make it noticeable. I never needed to use cc plates either.

If it were me, Id buy everything seperate. Springs, shocks/struts, CC plates, sway bars (if you're actually replacing them)
There's better combos out there than the bullitt setup that wouldn't be much more expensive if you shopped around and found good deals. Thats just my opinion though...

The springs dont lower your car very much in the Bullitt kit, maybe half an inch.

Mine dropped a full inch but I also didn't put the isolators back in.

Not running isolators in the rear is just a bad idea on a live axle car. I took mine out and they made horrible noise.
I would rather cut the spring a bit than have to go without the isolators.
I would pick up a set of C springs from ford and cut them (if they are not pre cut) so you end up with a solid 1.25 inch drop. You might have to go back in and remove some of the coil on the springs after install to get the drop you want, but its not that big of a deal.
I would get springs and shocks/struts with some MM brand CC plates to start off with.

I didn't have any noise with mine. No probelms at all.
Also when you cut a coil off the spring you're changing the tension charactoristics of that spring.
So I'd rather not use the isolators. I guess I just installed my springs correctly since I didn't get any noise.

If you have an IRS that may be why, on my live axle 7.5 inch rear is was very loud back there. Installing the rear springs correctly has no effect on if they do or do not make noise. It is just easier for the rear spring to move around vs the front that have more pressure on them to keep them from moving. Different springs can do differently im sure. I was using ford C springs when I had noise. My pig tails were faced correctly and I just didnt have a bottom isolator.
