I have a friend at work that is looking to spend around 6k~ on a new car. He has been looking all over for something that fits him and I recommended the good ole 5.0L Mustang. He seems to like the 94/95 body style better (I am still trying to talk him into a fox...) and they are in that price range~ so I have been showing him those. He wants something he can work on himself. He wants a vehicle that is not super expensive to keep up and he also wants it to of course be reliable.
Can you give me some detailed pros/cons for the cars so he is informed as to what to expect. I have went over a ton of stuff with him but I want to make sure I dont forget anything.
Also can you go over how much it will cost to rebuild the engine (average including price of rebuilt kits) and heads, intakes, and other such parts that he might be interested in. His goal for now is around 300/300 (engine hp/tq) but we all know that wont last. I just want to give him a price range that he will be looking to spend to get the car and also to fix it up mainly with heads/cam/intakes and bolt ons

Is he pretty adept at working on cars and does he have his own tools and a place to do so?
I'd rather have a fox personally, but if he's not going to be able to do some work on it himself, then the 94/95 isn't a bad idea. The main reason being the four-wheel disc brakes and 5-lug from the factory.
As far as cost to build it up, I'd say you could hit 300 at the wheels for 5k with full bolt-ons. I spent more than that, but I didn't exactly go the cheap route either.

He doesnt know much about working on a vehicle. I think he has tools and he has a place to work on the car at. He wants 300 at the engine for starts then he can go from there.
We found a 92 notch with 64k miles in good shape in Athens, Tn for 5200.

Well I have to say that I'm more partial to the 94-95 since i have one and am rebuilding it..but I also had a 1984 GT...also a great car.
The 94 I will say ..it is amazing....I have put 180 K on this car...I have not really done any MAJOR repairs to it. I finally had to replace the clutch..and only cause the throwout bearing finally went...the clutch itself was still good when we took it out.....was a mind blowing thing....I have never replaced anything on it except batterys...LOL...no water pump..alt..nothing....this may be a complete fluke..the car was made on Tuesday or something.....but it always starts and has never left me in the lurch.
The 84..eat water pumps every 50K at least...and the rad went at about 110K...........but once again...no MAJOR stuff.
The plus with the 94 and up....4 wheel disk and 5 lug......the covertions for Fox bodies is not alot of fun...nore cheap!
