Here's what I wish existed...
I have a [whothefuckcaresitsnotamustang] vehicle, and want an A/V system that doesnt' exist....
AM/FM/CD
Now, it can support only 1 CD, and that would be fine
iPod support.... or an aux in port - but better would be a small slot, similar to what a modern laptop has for a small flashdisk... something that a Nano would slide into.. like a CD, you can put your IPod into your stereo...
and it would have a monitor that would fold for access to the CD slot and iPod slot...
and the monitor would be touch screen
and it would be CD/MP3-4/DVD
And... here's the kicker
It would be a fully functional WiFi PC with the capability to run like XP, and load applications (such as Explorer, Streets&Trips, etc).... with upgrade capabilities to WiMax (if it ever materializes)....
+ touch screen
+ bluetooth
+ CDMA/cellular support
+USB/USB2 support
+ navigation
+ Sirius
that's all I ask...is it really so much?

and I forgot the most important piece - It would have complete access to the cars computer, and allow you to pull up everything abou the engine and other systems...

I've got a microITX VIA Epia system downstairs that I bought to go in my car. It needs a DC/DC power supply and it would be ready. You can get one of those fold out in dash monitors, but that kills your folding for the CD/iPod. You'd have to fab something up... Everything you want to do is doable, it just won't be as easy as installing a stereo.
Now if you want to design, build, and market your idea... :chin:

good luck with that. basically an in-car computer is what the doctor ordered, with logging software included for whatever model vehicle. which may be hard, depending on the car itself. i might go this route when i do dsmlink on my 91 gsx, instead of the standard laptop, this being so i can stick a 7" touch screen lcd in the dash, and monitor things in realtime right in front of me on my dash instead of the laptop which, if youre by yourself, is only good for recording runs.

I got you Ken this is what I plan on buying when I redo a system again. Best shit out there, met these guys and they'll soon be making it into a tuner software as well. This info is a year or so old cause i was looking to do this a bit back as well, ive just saved the email for a rainy day like today

Use one of these motherboards.
Use one of these DVD-RW drives. (I can't find anywhere that's got them right now, though...)
This is about the best display that I could find.
You'd have to fab up the front plate of it out of some kindof plastic. Mount it all in a picoITX chassis. And mount it in the car. It would take a lot of room in the dash. You might be able to do it with the bigger stereo slots, like in the f-bodies...but I haven't measured.

and a laptop hard disk. I forgot that part.
But it would run all your tuning software. It's got USB to plug it into the car's computer, hook up a GPS, plug in your iPod, you could install all sorts of software on it, probably even a cellular modem.
