what in the world is going on

Last night I was out and the car was running fine. Parked it and went to a club. When I came back out the damn thing wouldn't idle. If I didn't hold down the pedal a little bit it would stall and die. I gave it a good run to see if it would clean itself out and when I hit the pedal to the floor it hesitated for a few seconds and then took off like a bat out of hell. It did this all the way home. It did stop stalling on me but it was really jerky power, not a smooth surge but more peaky like a two stroke dirt bike or something. I dunno if my fuel filter is getting dirty or what's going on so if anybody could help me out and steer me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

I don't think it's that, but I could definitely be wrong because it ran like a top when I parked it but went all funky when I got back in it. Some idiot could have pissed in my gas tank for all I know. It got better the more I drove it, but it didn't go completely away. I did have the gas tank down pretty low one day so I'll try the fuel filter first cause they're pretty inexpensive and I'll go from there. Still open for suggestions and info! Thanks.

i was gonna say another possibility could be water in your fuel, cause that could definately do it as well

ok so i have some new findings. I changed the fuel filter and the old one was definitely not as good as it should have been but the car is still acting weird. It idled for 10 minutes at one time and then just shut off. When it's acting up like that the only way you can get it to start is to hold the accellerator to the floor, otherwise it won't start, just kick and stall. The only thing i can think of is the fuel pump is getting weak, but again i'm no mechanic. oh and the check engine light did come on for a second. any help as soon as possible would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Clean/replace the idle bypass valve (IAC valve) it is a round cylinder thing located on the throttle body or upper intake. You should also clean the MAF with on contact NO residue electronics cleaner. See if that helps.

My 01 manual mustang would just die and not idle at all, but it mainly did it when it was cold outside. Maf would be the first thing as it wont cost you much then the iac (you can try to clean it as well but i think there is a seal you might have to replace.

well ladies and gentleman, to all of you who said MAF......you were right. What a difference even in accelleration, this thing must have been going bad over a while cause she gets up and goes quicker than it did before. it goes through the rpms much quicker than before. before you know it you're flying down the road faster than you think. Thank you again to everybody who helped out!

i am having the same problem with mine i took it to a shop and they said it was the maf and its not holding fuel pressure so i need a maf, fuel pressure regulator, and a fuel pump. so hopefully that fixes everything
