I seem to be leaking gear oil from the general region circled in this image. (the image is from a 2005+ because I couldn't find one from a 2002) Any thoughts on where it could be leaking from / what needs replaced?

That would be your front rear end seal.

its the rear pinion seal, it shouldnt be to hard to change. You might have to pull the pumpkin out and the pinion to get to it but I hope not. It might just tab in after you remove the driveshaft, I cant remember off hand.

Remove the Ujoin mark the drive shaft and Ujoin for proper alingment I use magic markers. Then pop off the seal lightly tap it into place refill the rear end and your done drive it around for a few mintued then check for leaks repeat if needed again with a lift and the proper tools it shouldnt take 15 minutes.

i think that would be classified as a "blown" or "exploding" rear end, even as far as "grenading" your rear. Jack's Tacos will do this as well.
