More than one way to skin a catback?

I'm desperate to set up my '99 3.8 with a louder exhaust but there are quite a few options and I hate to spend $300+ on something I end up not liking. Thats where you guys come in. At the moment I have a few parts I ordered, CAI, plugs, underdrive pulley, and some short tube headers, but I'm hesitant to jump into just any exhaust. As we know a 3.8 motor needs special treatment to get a tough sound without getting ricey. What I'm aiming for is a nice low growl with as little droning as possible. But when I hit the throttle I want that bitch to scream. Should I go dual cat-back and dump it? Or just a dual cat-back with no dump? Maybe Run a single pipe to a high flow muffler and remove the cat? I hear "Pypes" sound great, but I like the reputation of Magnaflow and BBK. What do the V6 aficionados suggest to achieve my goal?

If you want loud then I would go dumps... just realize that no matter what you do as the loud factor increases the ricey factory also increases, so you have to find the limit. My 40 series flowmasters were about as far as you could go to sound somewhat good but above 3k it sounded ricey.

But your Flowmaster are dual and coming off an 8, I wont get the throat you have. So when you say go dumps you mean go with a dumped H pipe, no muffler, or what? Be specific for me player.

Yea, I am sorry. I sold a 2001 v6 before I picked up the Cobra. The v6 had 2.25 inch custom bent exhaust all the way back to tips and 40 series delta flow flowmaster mufflers. I had dumps for a while and finally purchased some good tips and had them finish it off. The dumps were loud more than mean sounding.

As long as you realize you'll never sound like a V8 you're ok.
I had a setup that I thought sounded pretty good and it was dumped. Flowtech afterburners run true dual.

On your set-up with the Flowtech (the muffler I was leaning toward) was it dual dumped or just a single pipe? And is it possible to hide the single far enough under the body to have it invisible without making the sound too raspy?

I had the y pipe cut out and a pipe running down each side to a muffler on each side. From there each muffler was dumped.

I've heard that an X-pipe and Borla Pro -XS mufflers with turn downs is the best sounding V6 exhaust. Thats comming from Tom out of SSMS.
