Which would likely produce a greater performance increase... a straight shot, in engine bay intake, or a fender well CAI?

None of the above.

Look to gain 3-5 horsepower from any of those, all a matter of what you prefer the most.

However, since someone will bring it up, if you have a fully built engine with ported intakes and head work with full exhaust, a proper length intake with a proper size filter could net you very large gains.
