^yea, i was gonna say black powder would have done the same thing and you can buy that much by going to walmart...not cutting thousands of matches wasting a bunch of time. i've done it many times.

Herb, goto wall mart and buy those pringles chips with plastic containers, some steel wool, AAA grain and A grain black powder, a whole lot of wire with alligator clips, a battery(quad or car), and some rolls of electrical tape.
Eat the chips, attach the two wires with the clips to steel wool and drop it in pringles container. Fill the pringles can with a whole bunch a AAA(fine) powder until the wool is covered. Then fill the rest up with A(coarse) powder. Punch a hole in the top to run the wiring through and tape the shit out of it all.
Find something fun to blow up, like a cat or seagull. Set the charge, drop back with the wiring, when your ready touch the two wires to the battery terminals. Wool heats and lights up, pringles can expodes, much fun and hilarity ensues.
