Quote:
is developing a new family of petrol fueled twin-turbo engines with four-cylinder, V6 and V8 powerplants all in the pipeline. The move is a key element of the Blue Oval’s plans to improve fuel economy and bring its engines in line with the competition from Europe’s carmakers.
Known as “twin-force”, the technology will debut in the upcoming Lincoln MKS flagship sedan due in 2008 and will eventually filter across most of Ford’s lineup. Derrick Kuzak, group vice president for global product development at Ford explained that twin-force will offer diesel-like fuel economy, reports Automotive News. Diesel motors currently offer 25 to 30% better fuel economy than their petrol counterparts.
In addition to the turbos, Ford will also be adding direct injection tech, which will increase output and improve fuel-economy further.
Kuzak revealed that there’s even more developments in the works. Ford will also be introducing V8 engines with cylinder deactivation, similar to GM’s displacement on demand and Chrysler’s upcoming Phoenix technology. Finally, they claim to be working on a new ‘power shift transmission’ that will be a six-speeder with the benefits of both a manual and auto gearbox, but considering the best automotive companies in the world haven’t yet managed to achieve this feat, we’re not holding much hope for Ford. Here’s hoping their dual-clutch transmissions are not too far from production.

I would like to know why they are doing twin-turbos instead of a single turbo.

On a V type engine I like Twins.
On a inline engine single.

In most setups, a single can be more efficient than a twin.

I know but on a 03/04 Slowbra I would rather have Twins.

yes however that goes in line with just making gratutious amounts of power.
from the factory, especially on a V type motor, a twin setup is probably easier to engineer than a single. one turbo per bank.
however i highly doubt well ever see turbo fords in affordable vehicles you or me can buy.

lol doubt it. it would be another Grand National situation. a car that stock, cant do much compared to the higher priced, more performance oriented cars under the same maker at the time. but crank up the boost, and it was a monster.
ford wont let that happen. a turbo cobra with either the current forged 4.6 or 5.4 would DECIMATE a GT500 like it was its bitch. as much as id love to see that happen, its ford, and im done holding my breath for them to make more badass affordable cars like they used to do.

What cobra? There isn't one any more. It died in 2004.

most of the twin turbo setups... are not one turbo per bank.. but one turbo to help spool the other.. Either way... boost is a good thing

And it took the cobra with it....the new item of interest is not a cobra...it is a Shelby GT500...the cobras are only on it because they were on it back in the day as well with the originals. It is not a cobra.
The cobra is dead until the GT500 goes away...or SVT comes back.
In fact, they had planned on killing the cobra moniker anyhow because it was going to be used on the 2 seater shelby AC cobra that they created concepts for...but as you can see, they haven't come to light yet...but the cobra name is dead...died in 04 along with SVT.

And that car won't because it was too much to manufacturer.

the cobra will be back after "Retro" dies. the only reason the GT500 moniker is around is because it can make ford more money than the Cobra moniker. dealerships cant rape 30K over markup for a cobra, tell the customer its a GT500 and its a whole new ball game. even though we all know 95% of the engineering behind he GT500 is from SVT and would be a Cobra if it wasnt for Shelby signing his name on the dash and saying "i want solid rear because its easy and cheap for me to comprehend".

Too bad they stopped halfway on the GT500, as far as the suspension goes.
