My long term plan for my car includes making upgrades to my rear end. One of the upgrades I'd like to do is making the transition to an 8.8'' rear end. Someone told me all I had to do was simply to change the center piece of the rear end. I don't know the terminology but ---0--- if that were the rear end it would be the ' 0 ' that would need to be replaced only. (The pumpkin. Just found out.) While swapping that out I'd change the gears to a 3.73 and a T-Lok. Can anyone tell me more about the process I'd have to go through to make this change?

when you say a pumpkin it usually refers to a Ford 9" do you want an 8.8 Live axle or and 8.8 IRS?

You will need a rear end from a 99-04 GT in order to make this work. Be ready to spend at least 600 dollars for a rear end in good shape unless you can find a hookup. You will be much better off buying a complete rear rather than having to piece one together in the end.

Someone told me I just needed to change the center part of the axle and that was it...I guess it's not that easy. Would making the change to a 8.8" be beneficial to my cars performance or would it only benefit by making it more durable. Would the performance to cost ratio be greater with an IRS system or regular?

what are you wanting to do with the car? your end goal will decide your course of action as far as deciding what type of rearend to go with...
if you are wanting to build a strictly straight line drag car, than an IRS will be useless as you will brake axles left and right...you will want a solid axle for this purpose...
if you want a car that is made for handling twisties and smooth acceleration rather than sudden hard acceleration in a straight line, you would probably be more justified in going with and IRS...
When you say "an IRS system or regular", I assume by regular you are meaning a solid axle?

Looking to build a fun all around car for street fun and not strictly for racing on the strip. Definitely not a drag car...more like a street car. So how do I go from a 7.5" solid to a 8.8" IRS?

IRS is a much heavier system than your factory rear end. If you are wanting to go this route be ready to spend around 1000 dollars for the entire setup. Yes, it will make a difference in handling, but, you can make the same difference with a solid rear if you want.
