03/04 Cobra Question

I've been looking into getting an 03 or 04 Cobra and I've noticed that on some cars the front emblem is the regular mustang while on others it is a Cobra. I've seen this on both the 03 and 04. Is there a reason why some 03 and 04's have the Cobra and some dont?

Some people replace them...some don't. Stock, they come with the horse. Mod #1 for most owners is to replace it with the snake.

yup no cobras have stock cobras on the front from the factory.
if you have any other questions or wish to know some things to look for please let us know so we can help you make a good educated decision into which car you want.
fyi they have more than 390hp/tq stock ... more like 425

But they actually produce more like 430 BHP. Your typical stock 03/04 Cobra produces between 360-380 whp on a dynojet. |

"Rated" and "actually produces" are not equals. like what JROC said, its "Rated" at 390 but actually dyno's 370-380whp which equates to about 420-430 at the crank.
Japanese cars do this as well, they have a "Gentlemans Clause" that the makers only rate the cars output at like 276hp, for insurance and other reasons.
there is no downside to under-rating a vehicle's output. however like ford has learnt the hard way, there is major downsides to over-rating the output, especially on performance vehicles. off the top of my head, i can think of two, the 2001 Cobra and the RX-8, were both rated at xxx hp but made almost 10% less.

Wait so these 03 cobras put out how much at the wheels? I thought they were based at390 at the engine not at the wheels. So they are puting out more then this. i REALLY WANT ONE THEN. i would sell my kidney to get one

Stock they put down between 365 to 375 at the wheels on average. There were some freaks of nature that put down in the 380's and a couple reportedly put down 393.
A $50 pulley, CAI, and a mail order tune gets to you to the 430-450 rwhp range depending on the pulley you chose.

What type of dyno is this on dynojet? I thought they would loose about 50whp. I woould have figured that they would be at around 340-350whp. And what is a CAI its been a while sence i have been in the v8 world. I can not wait to get one any one selling theres.

That's the point...they were "rated" at 390...however the actual numbers were closer to 420-430. They were rated 390 because of 1999 when they missed their advertised HP numbers and was a nasty fiasco. Also, at 390, the insurance rates were lower than 400+...so it looked better that way.
CAI = Cold air intake....
A manual loses about 15-17% through the drive train....so at 400ish,they would lose about 60 hp.
But, the point is, they were under rated by ford... |

My 03 cobra with an air filter and cat back exhaust put down right at 400rwhp/380tq. I would say on average they put down 360/340 at the wheels stock~ give or take depending on condition, etc. With blower cars it seems it varies more than others... there are some other rumors as to why some have more power than other (such as differing compression ratios) but no one has taken the time to check.

Yep, first mod for me was putting the cobra grille emblem on.
My car, with just a Steeda cat back and the air filter removed made 403rwhp and 380rwtq. Pulley/tune and CAI got it up to 442/461.
Might be carrying it back this Saturday to dyno it since I added the Stage IV blower, TB and plenum.

Cobras are extremely hot cars and that whine some have (k.b. or others) = pure sex! I think it's definitely worth the wait.
