This week I'm buying the parts for my computer and I have a few things still up in the air before I get everything. I've heard nothing but good things with the Quad Core processor from Intel but at the same time it's new technology and a part of me wants to go with a powerful Core 2 Duo.

So there's my dilemma. Either a Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0ghz or an Intel Quad Core 2.4ghz. Which would you get? Specs on both here:

For current games, you're better off with the higher clock speeds and only two cores. The number of games that utilize multiple cores is very low. The number of games that effectively use multiple cores is even lower. That will change as time goes on, but by then you'll probably want a new machine, anyway.

Good points, all of which I took into consideration when I looked at the Intel Core 2 Duo. It's perfected it well enough and it's rated pretty high. As for the Quad core, when they get better and more powerful I'll get one. My motherboard I'm getting with it will support the Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Extreme, and the Quad Core.

the Intel quad core is still just a fake quad core, two dual cores in parallel, and like Mark said, theres pretty much nothing out there that utilizes Dual core, let alone Quad core.

id just get a dual core and make sure whatever Intel socket you get now, is going to be used in the future for a few years. Like with AMD, the AM2 socket is the standard for its new dual and quad core chipsets for the next couple years, as far as motherboard setups go, ill be golden until we run dual-quad cores or whatever the next step is.

Get the Dual Core. It performs better in gaming. The Quad Core is more toward Servers.

Alright just confirming it. I also felt that Intel coming out with the Quads was a bit.. I dunno, AMD said "Hey we are doing this" and Intel shit it's pants and immediately began making and developing the Quad core processor.

Intel is kicking ass right now, for the past few years they started to slump as AMD gained more and more ground, and now AMD is kinda laying low, gearing up for their 65nm production to start producing mass amounts of processors to flood the market with cheap performance. Hell right now their best processor (6000+) is about 230$.

Which is nuts, when you consider that I dropped about a grand on my FX-55. It's still a viable gaming processor, though, which is a little nuts in itself...

^i wish i could say the same.. i've had nothing but trouble with my current AMD build, but the intel build before it ran flawlessly. hence, the pc sitting in pieces in my bedroom, waiting to be built, is an intel

I've built several A64 machines and a few Intel machines. Haven't had any trouble with any of them.
