Dissected a fetal pig in Bio yesterday and I got to take a few pictures and thought I'd share. I added the *WW* warning because while it's not obscene, those skirmish may not want to look.
Two notes: It was kind of hard to take still photos since the area for groups to work are very tight and we work on our Labs in Groups of four. So most of the photos came out bit shaky so I just grabbed a few of the best. My battery also died since it is an older camera and a few other shots were taken with the other's cellphone cameras which I hope to get and add.
Without further ado...
Description of each picture: 1) We have made an incision down the pig's stomach and to the side of the umbilical cord. (2) A poor photo as one of my lab partners goes to cut it's throat. [Pig wouldn't pay no protection money]. (3) We begin to open the pig by splitting it's ribs. (4) You can see at the top of the cavity the heart between the lungs (the two pinkish flaps), the dark mass is the liver and under the knife that stringy like material is the small intestine. (5) The umbilical cord being cut off (6) Another blurry shot of what should be the open cavity. (7) We can see the heart surrounded by the lungs again and the liver on the bottom edge of the frame. (8) A nice clean shot of the insides with the liver removed. The scalpel is pointing to the stomach. The gall bladder was located under the liver and attached to it. The flap between the lung and the stomach is the diaphragm. (9) Zoom out of the cavity. (10) The pig's jugular and numerous throat and neck organs (veins, arteries, muscles, esophagus, wind pipe...). (11) Continuation of the throat and windpipe into the body [I believe that's what it should be]
Enjoy!

I can only hope to do a cat and pregnant shark. I don't know what else we'll be getting since I haven't read any future Labs, but in the last 6 Labs we have had there have been three dissections, the first was a clam, then was a worm (which I did back in 8th grade), and then the fetal pig.
I was talking to someone from another college who's going into physical therapy and apparently they get to dissect a human body,a although I don't know the accuracy of that one.
The other things you missed was that we cut open the back to check out the nervous system (spinal cord, vertebra), and then to dissect the brain if we had time. Since we were just hacking it up afterwards because we had finished we squeezed the skull after cutting it open and the brain just oozed out like pudding. Brain matter is apparently not very dense or hard, I guess you could call it.
My plan was though to take home the skull. They were hacking and skinning away at it, popped out it's eye and juices flew everywhere. Broke the jawbone and the tongue popped out sending the girl 5 feet back. The TA found it interesting, but when she found out that I wanted to take home th skull she told me I couldn't because it was Biotoxic (it wouldn't have been safe or any living creatures), again I guess you could call it that. My whole plan was to hang it from my rear view mirror, just dangling. When I got bored I'd chuck it out the window off the Expressway, watch it hit some car as they think they hit some baby's skull or something, try and make pieces of what they hit only to be left with a dried out pig's skull. I found it amusing, as did everyone else.

I didn't enjoy the dissection stuff, mostly it's the smell that got to me.

Yeah after a while the smell became more noticeable to me, luckily I can usually ignore it. The preservative they use for the animal actually has a chemical in it that makes you hungry so after three hours of inhaling it everyone is just saying how starved they are with stomach's rumbling.

Are you kidding me? That smell makes me want to vomit. Even if I smell it randomly somewhere I feel like throwing up it smells so disgusting. I think my brother feels the same way about it too, it's pretty snarly.
