OK, this is hopefully a simple question. I removed the hift boot, the accessory plug wire, the four screws holding the dust cover, and the four bolts holding down the shifter (It is a Hurst). Is there anything else holding this in other then the gasket goo. I openned the convertible top, put the seats back, stood upright, and pulled and this thing didn't budge? before I really yank hard, I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing some secret screw or bolt. Thanks - Gary
I want to try the stock shifter for awhile and then try the MGW for awhile and compare the three. The hurst is OK but anytime you get comfortable, it will pop without engaging second and make you look like an idiot.

After those 4 bolts on the shifter, nothing else is golding it in. It must have been a funny site watching you try to pull that out though lol.
Also you got that think in Neutral?

nope thats pretty much it, just 4 bolts that hold the shifter base to the transmission. maybe get under the car with a flathead and get between the shifter base and tranny and pry

What we always did with mine was slam it from 1st to 2nd ,2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th then just pull it right out.

I just replaced my shifter yesterday. I heard it was bad to "slam it from 1st to 2nd etc" and that it was much safer to go left to right. I just pushed the shifter right like I was trying to go into 5th and as I put pressure on the shifter with one hand I tapped my hand applying the pressure with my other hand. Eventually it can off. BTW I changed my pro 5.0 shifter for a MGW one and all I can say is the MGW shifter is amazing.

Ive slammed mine through the gears for almost 3yrs now and even done it hard enough going into 2nd that i have pulled the shift knob off. So with that being said it wont hurt it to do that.

I know it's not bad to slam the gears while driving, i am guilty myself (though pulling the shift knob off is impressive ) I guess I was talking about the fact that you are slamming the shifter while it's unbolted and that something could get bent/broken because it is not attached properly.

it can be a pain to get off sometimes. The 4 bolts around the shifter base is all that holdsd it on. You can try to wiggle it side to side~ just dont be to forceful as it shouldnt take that much to get it off unless who ever put it on didnt use the right sealer and put something like lock tite or something on it....

Well it finally got warm in Indianapolis and I got under the car and tapped the shifter out with a hammer and screw driver. It came right out and I re-installed the stock shifter. Oh, this is soo much smoother then the Hurst. I am sure that the stock one may not be better for racing but this is a convertible and I just plan to screw around from time to time. Anyways, the Hurst was a shorter thow and clicked into gears but would did not like slow gentle driving which my wife and I do 90% of the time. To make a long story short, I really love this car now that it is warm and smooth.
