1972 Mustang Engine
In 1972, the US Government implemented new engine emissions regulations, and also began requiring engines to be tested for their horsepower ratings under load of all accessories such as power steering, the alternator, etc. These two items caused a drop in stated horsepower, although the horsepower hadn't actually changed much, it was just stated differently. Nonetheless, these new restrictions negative impacted the sales of all performance cars, including the Mustang.
Base:
• 250 cubic inch inline 6, naturally aspirated, 1 bbl carbureted, 98 horsepower
• 302 cubic inch V8, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 140 horsepower

• 351 cubic inch V8, naturally aspirated, 4 bbl carbureted, 275 horsepower
1973 Mustang Engine
1973 would mark the end of the first generation of the Mustang, and when the 1974 Mustang was released, it appeared as though Ford Motor Company was no longer attempting to be a performance car. Power dropped again in 1973 for the performance minded Mach1.
Base:
• 250 cubic inch inline 6, naturally aspirated, 1 bbl carbureted, 99 horsepower
• 302 cubic inch V8, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 141 horsepower

1974 Mustang Engine
When the 1974 Mustangs hit the showroom floor, it was a whole new car, so it was named the Mustang II. Not only did the Mustang II not look like its predecessors, it didn't run like them either, mostly due to the relatively weak engine lineup. There would be no performance model in 1974, although there would be the Ghia, which was just a luxury upgrade. The Mach1 still existed, but it had no performance engine.
Base, Mach1, and Ghia:
• 140 cubic inch inline 4, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 88 horsepower
• 171 cubic inch V6, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 105 horsepower
1975 Mustang Engine
While there would still be no performance model for 1975, this model year marked the introduction of the "Five-O" Mustang. The Mustang was still offered only as a base or a Ghia, but the 5 liter V8 was a welcomed addition to the Mach1.
Base, Mach1, and Ghia:
• 140 cubic inch inline 4, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 88 horsepower
• 171 cubic inch V6, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 105 horsepower
• 302 cubic inch V8, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 140 horsepower
1976 Mustang Engine
1976 brought about the implied return of the Shelby name with the Cobra II. Much like the new Mustang, the Cobra adopted the "II". Unfortunately, there was no high performance engine offered, as the Cobra II was basically an appearance package, and the engine offerings didn't change.
Base, Mach1, Ghia, and Cobra II:
• 140 cubic inch inline 4, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 88 horsepower
• 171 cubic inch V6, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 105 horsepower
• 302 cubic inch V8, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 140 horsepower
1977 Mustang Engine
A year of subtle appearance changes in an attempt to make the Mustang II look a bit sportier, but again, no engine changes.
• 140 cubic inch inline 4, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 92 horsepower
• 171 cubic inch V6, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 103 horsepower
• 302 cubic inch V8, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 140 horsepower
1978 Mustang Engine
This last year of the Mustang II, and the last year to tolerate these low performance engines, and a year later, the dawn of the most popular Mustang body, possibly ever.
• 140 cubic inch inline 4, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 92 horsepower
• 171 cubic inch V6, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 103 horsepower
• 302 cubic inch V8, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 140 horsepower
1979 Mustang Engine
In 1979 the Fox Body chassis was introduced, and although it would see some changes over the years, the fox would be the Mustang chassis all the way to 1993. It was during this time that the Mustang became known as the "five-o", even though the Mustang II had the engine, this chassis made it famous. However, Ford offered an option in power with their 2.3L turbocharged 4 cylinders. This was also the year that Ford began stating their engines sizes by liters rather than by cubic inches. The engines offered were available in all forms of the car, as there was no GT, or similar performance model. There was the Cobra, but it was basically a trim package.
• 2.3 liter inline 4, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 88 horsepower
• 2.3 liter inline 4, turbocharged, 2 bbl carbureted, 132 horsepower
• 2.8 liter V6, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 109 horsepower
• 3.3 liter inch V6, naturally aspirated, 1 bbl carbureted, 85 horsepower
• 5.0 liter V8, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 140 horsepower
1980 Mustang Engine
There were still no performance models offered in 1980, so once again all engines were offered on all Mustangs sold. The 5.0 liter engine was not offered in 1980, but would return in a few years. In its place for the time being was a 4.2L engine that was less powerful. In an effort to make the automatic transmission Mustangs as quick as the manual transmission models, the 2.3L and 3.3L Mustangs with auto transmissions got a slight bump in bhp.
• 2.3 liter inline 4, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 88 horsepower (manual trans only)
• 2.3 liter inline 4, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 90 horsepower (automatic trans only)
• 2.3 liter inline 4, turbocharged, 2 bbl carbureted, 132 horsepower
• 3.3 liter V6, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 91 horsepower (manual trans only)
• 3.3 liter inch V6, naturally aspirated, 1 bbl carbureted, 94 horsepower (automatic trans only)
• 4.2 liter V8, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 119 horsepower
1981 Mustang Engine
Again, no performance models and no 5.0L, and 1981 also saw the drop of the turbocharged 2.3L. Not a particularly exciting year for the Mustang engine lineup.
• 2.3 liter inline 4, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 88 horsepower
• 3.3 liter inch V6, naturally aspirated, 1 bbl carbureted, 94 horsepower
• 4.2 liter V8, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 120 horsepower
1982 Mustang Engine
Finally, the 5.0L would return, and this time it would stick around until 1995, and this period was what cemented the 5.0L in motoring history. However, the addition of the Mustang GL, GT, and GLX hinted at possible upcoming, performance Mustangs as were seen in the 60s and 70s.
Base:
• 2.3 liter inline 4, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 88 horsepower
• 3.3 liter inch V6, naturally aspirated, 1 bbl carbureted, 94 horsepower
Mustang GT/GLX:
• 4.2 liter V8, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 120 horsepower
• 5.0 liter V8, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 157 horsepower
1983 Mustang Engine
The biggest news for the Mustang in 1983 was the long await return of the convertible. However, the engine lineup was also refreshed for 1983 and that refresh including the removal of the 4.2L and 3.3L, the addition of a 3.8L V6 and a new turbocharged, fuel injected 2.3L, and the 5.0L got a sizeable jump in power.
Base:
• 2.3 liter inline 4, naturally aspirated, 1 bbl carbureted, 88 horsepower
• 3.8 liter inch V6, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 112 horsepower

1984 Mustang Engine
1984 marked the (illegal) return of the GT350, as well as the introduction of the SVO Mustang. There were additional 5.0L engines offered, now featuring fuel injection. This year marked the introduction of the Saleen Mustang, although it would be a while before Saleen began making engine performance alterations.
Base:
• 2.3 liter inline 4, naturally aspirated, 1 bbl carbureted, 88 horsepower
• 3.8 liter inch V6, naturally aspirated, fuel injected, 120 horsepower

1985 Mustang Engine
The GT350 was gone in 1985, but the SVO returned. There would be power increases for the SVO 2.3L and the 5.0L HO motor, although the Turbo GT wasn't offered.
Base:
• 2.3 liter inline 4, naturally aspirated, 1 bbl carbureted, 88 horsepower

• 5.0 liter V8, naturally aspirated, fuel injected, 200 horsepower
SVO:
• 2.3 liter inline 4, turbocharged, fuel injected, 205 horsepower
1987 Mustang Engine
While still based on the fox body chassis, the 1987 Mustang got a fairly elaborate refresh, with a new sportier look, which yielded better aerodynamics. There would be only two engines offered, as the only options were the base model, the GT, and the Saleen, although the Saleen still used the basic GT engine.
Base:
• 2.3 liter inline 4, naturally aspirated, 1 bbl carbureted, 88 horsepower
Mustang GT:
• 5.0 liter V8, naturally aspirated, fuel injected, 225 horsepower

• 2.3 liter inline 4, naturally aspirated, 1 bbl carbureted, 88 horsepower
Mustang GT:
• 5.0 liter V8, naturally aspirated, fuel injected, 225 horsepower
1989 Mustang Engine
There were no changes to the Mustang or the engine lineup, but the Saleen models got their first increase in horsepower.
Base:
• 2.3 liter inline 4, naturally aspirated, 1 bbl carbureted, 88 horsepower
