Transmission Flush

With all the transmission talk I figure I'd throw this one out there. Ok so when I change my oil next I also plan to do the seafoam mod and also flush the tranny fluid and change the filter. I have a 2002 Automatic (4R70W) and according to my Haynes manual this transmission holds 13.9QTs of fluid, however once I drain the fluid in the pan and swap the filter out the manual says just to refill with 4 quarts of fluid. I'm assuming all the fluid is not in the pan, thus the other 10 qts are somewhere else in the transmission? This is the first time I will be doing this and I'm just looking for some info on the guys who have allready done this. Time consuming? Difficulty? Fluid preference? Lastly what do you do with the old used fluid? Also the haynes manual says to take out the bolts in the rear of the pan and then allow it to drain, but isn't there a plug to the pan which you simply pull as you do with the oil?

This is the only thing mine goes to the dealer for is a tranny flush.

Carry it to the dealership and pay the 120 bucks, best money you'll ever spend. Make sure you get an entire tranny flush, not just change the fluid. I was hard on my auto but it held up just fine.

And to answer your question, a majority of the fluid is held in the torque convertor.

I would take lowflyn's advice.

I flushed my tranny 15k ago and it was one of the hardest things I've ever done maintenance wise on a car. BUT, it's not impossible. Took me about 3 hours if I recall. On my 97 I have a plug on my tranny pan but you need to take it off anyway to clean it and put a new filter in. While your in there do a shift kit.

The torque converter was annoying because you have to take the dust cap off the bottom and spin the motor over until you can see the drain bolt up inside. Really annoying if your doing the job yourself...

If you have an auto and you care about it you should flush your trans fluid every year... most dont ever lol... or wait till like 60k when its to late.

I try to get to mine every 30k or so. Yearly is probrobly not a bad idea haha.

So basically what your saying is to do it yourself....j/k. I'll take it to the dealer. I've had it changed their twice now but it was $200! I suppose its worth it though considering I need the car to last another 40-50K before I'm out of this whole school thing...again. Thanks for the advice.

Just a little more info and maybe some money saving tips. If you have a jiffy lube in your local area they can perform this service. You have to take them your filter and expect for it to be there for approx 1 to 2 hours they call this a t-tech service. I used to do these however the one thing people didn't understand about this service that jiffy lube won't tell you is. Without changing the filter it really is a waste of money. Make them replace it after the flush which when connected to the automatic transmission lines that come off of your radiator or tranny cooler when they start the car it transfers the old fluid out and pulls the new fluid in once the t-tech machine is empty the lines are re-installed on the cooler or radiator and at that point they should replace the filter. it really is a total sysyem flush. It is geberally alot cheaper to go there and aviod high dealership prices in my opinion seeing as they do the exact same job and for only about $70.00 Hope this helps EVIL-G-NIUS

Yea you don't need to be certified to work at the Jiffy Lube in my town. I don't think I would let an on-the-job trained idiot touch something like my tranny.

This might be stupid to ask, but i'm guessing if you haven't changed the tranny fluid and it has 94k on it. You shouldn't do it? I have no clue if the past owner ever changed it. It was a woman, so i'm guessing not. Also I am leaking a couple drops a week of tranny fluid from what looks to be the rear seal. Am I screwed?
