Just got a new '03 GT and been having issues with the reverse gear. It makes a grinding sound whenever I try to put it in reverse. The only way I been able to get the car to go backwards is to shift it to reverse before I turn on the engine. Anyone know what the problem could be?

Are you having problems in any other gear? It could just be as simple as adjusting your clutch. With the toe of your foot pull the clutch pedal toward you and it might be as easy as that.
Otherwise...it could be a bent fork making it not seat fully into the gear.

Try this next time you start out, put clutch into 4th gear, don't engage of course, just pull shifter into 4th then push back to neutral then pop it back to reverse...
Just about every manual trans I had did the same thing (even if not grinding... then just fighting), putting it in another gear, 4th or 5th first would allow it to go right into reverse on the next shift, I think it has something to do with the synchros and the straight cut gears on reverse...

do you have flop in your clutch petel aka to much slack in your clutch cable? That might be an issue.

I guess that must of been it. After I put it in 5th I can put it in reverse just fine now. Another question I have, is that a common thing with these cars or is this something I might want to get checked out? Anyway, thanks for the suggestions guys

I've always thought it was common, every stang I've owned, either T5 or tr3650 had done the same thing, reverse isn't sychronized like the forward gears
