Any of you guys ever used Royal Purple? And what type of oil do you generally use? 10w40? 5w20? I really have no idea what the 05 mustangs are suppose to take. i'm just now getting to where i'm changing my own.

Never used the purple .I use Mobil 1 5W20 .The car comes factory filled with Motorcraft synthetic blend ford recommends 5w 20 synthetic blend motor oil.(which is the recommended oil in the manual). Note that synthetic blend is NOT the same as full synthetic.

I have more oil experience than 99.9% of the people on just about any site. What Herbstang posted is the absolute fact on synthetic oil. I have posted on this site and others facts on oil types and what is myths or just plain untruths. Synthetic oil is superior to conventional oil in every application and usage. Brand difference is not even an issue. In test I was a analyst in found the difference in synthetic oil is not even worth reporting. Whether Amsoil, Royal Purple, Mobil One, Havoline, Castrol, Penzoil, Quaker State, Valvoline and a few more oils I forget at this moment are all quality Synthetic products. It is all in preference. I have always been a Castrol user way before the Synthetics were around and still use it 90% of the time but I have tried just about every product out there. 2 oil changes ago I used Amsoil. Filters are another thing you can spend 3.99 or 12.99 on a filter and they all do the same thing and when you change the oil you throw them out. What you are willing to pay is up to you but I mostly use Motorcraft or Fram filters.

alright. Isn't there like a platinum or high end that mobil 1 makes? Can anyone elaborate on that why it's the better choice? if it's the better choice?

I use Mobil 1, I am sure Royal Purple is great I have just heard more than one issue come up after using it but of course no direct link to it being the problem~ I think the 4.6L is a funny motor when it comes to oil and its tolerances

I know if i run full synthetic in my 5.0, it ends up running out the rear main seal and the drain plug seals, even with brand new ones in there.....i end up running regular castrol or valvoline (5W-30 in winter and 10W-30 in summer) and a motorcraft filter......I would not recomend Fram filters though, i cut one apart and there is not nearly as much guts inside compared to say a motorcraft and its the same price for either one.

I have used Valvoline, Amsoil and Mobile One Synthetics in my 5.4 over all I have been pleased with Mobile. You can tell in a car using anything less that full synthetic if you spent alot of time in a quick lube like me. Other crap just seems to gum up in the never engines of course if you look at things like temp and oil passage size then you will realize while.
On the filter topic get a K&N or Mobile filter.

I have heard its bad to switch frm conventional to synthetic after the engine has run conventional all its life. Is this true? would I be okay to go to a blend then to full?

Its bs plain and simple, if you use a higher mileage full synthetic you will be alright, the basic issue is the size of the molocules were conventional oils cary insize synthetic is one uniform size- it can cause leaks in older vehicles pre 80's I have put it in an 289 in a 67 Mustang with no issue at all. Valvoline has a Maxlife Synthetic that works well for 5K to 6K I use this in my wifes Tundra and I have used it for years, also Mobile One has just released a high mileage full synthetic.
For what your going with use the full synthetic and dont listen to the idiots out there whom preach conventional oil is great and the synthetic will fry your engine its simply not true, we have a better product on the market and it will save you money in the long run.
