Here are a few pictures taken during the most recent MS Regional Auto-x event. The car isn't in full race-prep by the way. For a national tour/pro-solo event, there would be a bunch more decals on the car...oh, and maybe there will be an ME decal on there one of these days....*cough* brent *cough*
And thanks to Jeff and the guys at AtomicPerformance (site sponsor)...Great stuff for a great price...
Enjoy...

6'7" is pretty tall.
One day I'm going to try out some autocross. It looks like it would be pretty cool.

high hp + rwd = useless in 1st and 2nd, which is what autoX is usually about. sadly you would probably get embarrassed by miatas your first time out, just because they can go WOT through all the turns and you will barely be able to do 1/4 throttle without kicking the rear out, unless you have slicks.
tis why im building my gsx for such a task, quick spooling stroker+awd+suspension+sticky tire is going to rape on the autoX or roadcourse.

I'm not really worried about being competitive. I just want to try it out.

Man, that's the same way I am when I do it. Just go to have fun, normally I end up spinning out or taking out a few cones, but it's all fun. Actually beat a ferrari my first time to autox.
And I must say, the funniest car to ever watch autox was a 2003 Cobra coupe with a 2.6 KB and DR's. All he could do was tap the gas for a second out of the turns, too much power for anything else.
And Nate, as far as autoxing the jeep, go for it, watched a aerostar put a hurting on several cars (including me) with a good driver.

Not quite...I can see you aren't a particularly "experienced" auto-x-er (at least not on a national level)...it's all about car control...high hp cars can be incredibly successful in competition with the right driver and the right setup...and if you are going to do any sort of "competitive" racing, why wouldnt you do it on a "race" tire?
In any event, the two of the top three cars in the Super Stock class this past year at the national championships were a porsche gt3 and a 2003 z06, finishing 1st and 3rd, respectively...the 2nd place car was a lotus exige...in any event, my point is that the high hp cars can be very competitive because they have something known as low-end TORQUE where as the smaller, lighter lotuses, miatas, etc don't have torque at all...
I have driven both types of car, and the little cars handle the turns better at WOT, but they can't get out of there own way when it comes to powering out of a corner...this of course becomes very course-dependent...some courses are more suited for accelerating out of turns while others are more suited for tight handling "zippy-cars"...
But what it really all boils down to is your skill as a driver, not the car...I mean some cars are better in a class than others (such as the Shelby GT competing in the same stock class with a standard GT, which is total b.s. btw), but in the end, it really all comes down to who is a faster/better driver to make his/her car faster...

would it be okay to take a DD to one of these or does this kind of thing beat up the car pretty bad?

You should be fine...just don't overdrive the car. I think it's better to start out in something slower...power really doesn't help you as much as driving ability, and the only way to learn to drive it is to get out there and do it.

Some auto-x pictures from my last two events at Atlanta Motor Speedway for the SCCA National Tour and SCCA ProSolo...Enjoy!
(Oh, and don't laugh too hard at the "redneck" Hoosier "decals" that I used for the ProSolo...The story behind them is because I forget to order a new set of decals for my Hoosier contingency in time for the event, and Hoosier requires 3 "nicely-placed" decals on the car to be eligible (2 on sides, 1 on front)...so, since I didnt have the decals, I "made" my own to meet the requirements...)
