I have a 96 GT 5 speed with factory double spoke 17" rims. I bought it used and it has 77,000 miles. Runs strong. When I drive it at 75 mph the engine is at 2250 rpm. When i tested the speed with a GPS I was actually doing 65mph and revving at 2250. Does 2250 rpm seem high at an actual 65mph? Do you think the gears might have been changed that would be giving me a 10 mph difference?
Does anyone know the stock gears for a 96GT 2V 5 speed are?
thanks

96 GTs might have had 2.73 gears stock as well hmm. You can turn your tire one full time and count DS revolutions to get a guestimate

Thanks for your answers. I am running an actual 65mph at around 2150-2250rpm. The speedo is stating 75, so I am out 10 mph. I think I will investigate the rear end gears.
I am new to this site and to mustangs. "You can turn your tire one full time and count DS revolutions to get a guestimate" what is a DS revolution?
thanks

Those might even be 3.08 gears as well.... if the car came with 2.73's there was a factory upgrade to 3.08's

thanks for all your great help guys. Does anyone know if:
1) the spedometer can be calibrated on a 96 GT? if so how much do you think it would cost?
2) Does anyone know of a good Mustang Shop in Syracuse, NY area?
thanks
Steve

the only way to calibrate the speedo on your car (having a speedo gear) is with a dallas speedcal unit or a speedo gear. You may can use the speedcal unit or you may not can~ depends on year and such. I am sure other companies besides dallas mustang make it~ I had one on my 01 v6 and it worked really good.
