I am regearing my axles to try to gain some mpg's and power back (it feels like I am pulling a trailer all the time). I have 3.55's now and am moving to 4.56's. The cost is about $250 for parts and $250 labor per axle ($500/axle total). One day I found someone north of Atlanta selling the exact same axle I have now, but with 4.56 gears ($500~), an Auburn limited slip ($400~), and Grand Cherokee disc brakes ($200~). The best part is that it was the same price as I was going to pay to get my axle regeared ($500). A few phone calls and a 3 hour drive later and I am half way done with my project with over $600 in free parts to boot.
When I picked the axle up it was a little rusty from sitting for a year and the brake lines were ghetto rigged.....
The almost brand new rotors, calipers, and pads were rusty as hell.
What I paid the dollas for. The gears look brand new and the LSD is very tight feeling.
I threw on new brake hardware (I'm sure I could have redid the stuff I had, but might as well do it right will its sitting on jackstands), redid the shitty brake plumbing, and threw on some paint....
I also shaved about an inch off the bottom of the housing where it hangs below the diff cover and ordered a ridiculously overbuilt new diff cover to protect the goodies inside; once that comes in I will bolt it up, fill it with fluid, bleed the brakes, and I will be good to go in the rear

looks nice.....what size tires are you running? i know gears make a huge difference acceleration and mpg wise when you throw on bigger tires....are you running more gear than required to get the speedo and acceleration back to stock?

I am running 35x12.5" tires, these new gears will get my final ratio right around back to stock with the 3.55 gears and 215/75/15 tires. I would have liked to go a little deeper (4.88), but no one makes a gear set deeper than 4.56 for this axle. Nate, I still have the axle but am trying to sell it.

Hey Jimmy, if you're ever looking for a one-off product or anything else I have a friend here in town who does off-road fabricating on the side, me and a few friends have gotten him into cage building, tubular a-arms, K-members, etc...
Anyway, back on topic, name of the shop is white rino fabricators. Good guy and really good at what he does. CNC and several benders as well as top of the line welders.

I got an accurate speedometer gear yesterday and kept track of my mileage going to Fun Ford today. I got a hair over 17 mpg for the trip. I drove the whole way with the A/C on, did 70-85, and got caught in stop-and-go traffic twice. Not bad if you ask me.
This was probably the first trip in my Jeep I have actually enjoyed since I owned it. Has good power, good mileage, rides smoother (had a bad vibe from my u-joint strap bolts being loose on the rear pinion), and I finally FINALLY eliminated the squeaky dashboard.
I don't have many pictures from FFW, it was rescheduled at the last minute and it looked like it was going to rain all day, so the turn out was kind of lame. Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture of the AC Cobra with an airbrushing of a nude girl riding on the back of a snake across the hood, lol.

Also, my old green car now has a 351w, an 8-pt cage, and runs 12's flat while spinning the drag radials. My old silver car has a 351w also, a complete tubular suspension with coil overs, and runs deep into the tens. Pictures of the green car next weekend!
