When guys do 8.8 swaps, does anyone ever consider 8.8s out of the explorers/mountaineers? I was thinking about it today, my buddy just picked one up to put under his Jeep. He got it up for $180 with 3.73s, LSD, and disc brakes (Not a big deal to the 'Stang guys, but it is for the Jeep guys, lol). Plus, the spline count on these 8.8s is 2 higher than the Mustang 8.8s. They are 59ish inches WMS-to-WMS if I recall correctly, whats the width of a Mustang 8.8? If you swap in a Mustang 8.8, regear to 3.73, and add a LSD, you would probably be close to the $1000 mark if you buy everything new and have a shop set up the gears. If you bought Explorer 8.8 with the gears you wanted and the LSD for $200-250, cut off the explorer brackets and welded on the Mustang ones, you would probably come in for less with a stronger axle to boot (after you welded the tubes to the housing so you don't spin axle tubes, lol).
Thoughts? Ideas? Feasible swap into a Fox, SN95, New Edge, or S197?
