Flowmaster vs. Magnaflow Exhaust System?

I am a first time poster on these forums and am looking for some direction so that I can help my son on his car. He would like to change the exhaust system on his 2004 V6 3.9L Mustang. He would like to have the low end rumble that the V8 has, but that is simply not possible with the V6. But maybe we can improve what is currently there. He has looked at adding the Borla exhaust system, but in talking to the muffler shop where I get work done, the owner indicated that he felt the Borla system was over priced and that here are better ways to go. He suggested either the Flowmaster, using Super 40's, or the Magnaflow exhaust systems. He also said I should look on the internet for the best price on these systems. I located both of these at AutoPartsWarehouse for about $530 each.
In looking through these forums I see the Flowmaster mufflurs mentioned quit often.
So I have several questions I am hoping some of you might be able to help me with. First off, do you feel the Flowmaster or the Magnaflow might be the better way to go?. My muffler shop felt the Flowmaster might sound better. If ordering on the internet, who is a good, reputable dealer?
I would tell my son to just take it to the muffler shop, but this is something we can do together. I just want to help him make the right choice in which system to get.
Thanks for your help,
Lon

I haven't heard the magnaflows on a V6 at this point, but I have heard the flowmasters on one and they do sound decent for it being a V6. Kyle on here has that setup currently on his 04 V6 and it does sound good. However, he does have an off/road X pipe, so it will sound a bit louder than it will on your son's car, unless you have already done an offroad pipe as well (aka, removed all of the catalytic converters).
He did post up a video of it a few days ago that I will see if I can find the link to so you can hear what it sounds like.
Personally, I believe the magnaflows are a much better quality muffler, however I haven't heard them on the car so I can't say if they sound good or not. They do on a GT, but, that isn't a 3.9L V6.
So, my recommendation is to get the Flowmaster 40's. They will get him about as close to the sound as I think a V6 can.
EDIT: here is the link to those mufflers on a 3.9L V6, however he has no cats:
lowered the car more and got it nice and clean

Thanks for the reply.
I agree whit you as far as the quality. And maybe the manufactures do to because the Flowmaster has a 50,000 mile warranty and the Magnaflow is a lifetime warranty. And in the pictures the Magnaflow appears to have a nicer finish and they use more SS.
Thanks for the link.

if you really want more of the bass-iness from a flowmaster, make it a turn down. that's what my V6 had
Edit: Come to think about... my GT does, too.

Instead of the tail pipes coming out the back by the bumper, they are turned down towards the ground just past the rear axel...

basically, instead of having the pipes come out of the back, the pipe is turned down in a 70degree manner at the back axle. This causes the exhaust to have a deep tone since it echoes from the pavement to the bottom of the car. Has a great tone inside of the vehicle, and is not overly to loud outside of the vehicle. I think truly, the best way to have that v8 engine sound out of a v6.

Go with the flows. Flowmasters are thick as hell and will take forever to rust out. A 50,000 mile warranty is plenty.

I'd bet they are the same...but it is hard to tell via a recording as each device records differently. Kyle's is flows with an offroad X...so it really isn't going to get any louder...and offroad pipe is an offroad pipe. If you have headers, it might be a touch more...or maybe if you are running single it might be a touch more...but either way it will be hard to tell via a recording.
As for the clip, just click New Reply and then when that loads click manage attachments. as long as your clip fits the size limits of the attachments, then you can attach it. Otherwise, host it on youtube or something and link to it.

I went Mangaflows and love them. Everyone and their brother gets Flowmasters. Sometimes you gotta stand out.

I have dual Cat back Magnaflows on my 03 V6 and I couldn't be happier. People who are less educated on the styleing of the mustangs often mistake mine for a GT because of its sound. If dont think you really need the X pipe to the headers. You won't see any performance gain and sound improvements would be minimal. Just get the dual magys.
